A TRAIN was seriously damaged when it ploughed into a metal bar thrown across the track by thugs at a Manchester station.
The wreckers ripped a 10ft long safety handrail from the side of the line and left it across the tracks at Burnage station, where it was hit by a train travelling at high speed on its way from Manchester Airport to Piccadilly.
No one was hurt, but the bar smashed the front windscreen and the driver's table and caused major structural damage.
The cost of repairs is likely to be more than é20,000.
Risk
Pc Christopher Walker, of British Transport Police, said: "These people have put the driver and everyone on that train's lives at risk.
"An object like this clearly had the potential to derail this train. I am appealing for the local community to come forward with information to assist with the investigation."
It is not known how many people were on the train, but it is understood the driver was able to continue his journey to Piccadilly, where the train was taken out of service.
Insp David Parker of BTP said: "We do get problems at Burnage from time to time, mainly with anti-social behaviour by youths on the station and occasionally with damage to trains. It seems to come in spells."
Anyone with information should call Pc Walker at British Transport Police on 0800405040 or Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
