Tehal Singh Bhakar, also known as Ted Singh, from Victoria Park, Manchester, was well known in the city's Sikh community. He was 77.
The entrepreneur arrived from India in the late 30s with his father, Mela, and older brothers Bhadur and Chana. They ran a textile factory. A father of eight, grandfather of 37 and great grandfather of four, he went on to run a number of businesses on his own. He also owned numerous properties and nightclubs.
Following in the footsteps of his father he contributed to the running of the Gurudwara temple, Monton Street, Moss Side, and held the post of president.
Leading the tributes, his grandson Vijay Singh said he was an enterprising individual with innovative ideas and firm moral values.
He said: "His integrity and dignity were some of his most alluring attributes. He was a charismatic individual who wore his heart on his sleeve. People who remember him remember that no matter how successful he became he still remained grounded and found the time to provide help and support to anyone, regardless of their backgrounds.
"He would provide support, both emotionally and financially, to anyone who needed it whatever their religion or nationality."
Tehal's funeral took place yesterday at Southern Cemetery.

Although I myself never had the fortune of meeting this great man, I have heard alot about him from his grandson at university, and regret that the Sikh community of Manchester has lost such a prized soul. In this dark hour, I offer my deepst sympathies and regrets to the Bhakar family, and am pleased to know that this great man's integrity, respect and honesty, live on in his immediate family with his grandson Mr Vijay Singh, who I know will continue to uphold his grand father's honour, pride and dignity.
Deepest condolences to the family.
