RUSH-hour commuters faced travel chaos this morning after a car crashed into a key level crossing.
Barriers became stuck at the crossing at Navigation Road Metrolink and train station just after 6am, causing queues of traffic along Navigation Road and Wellington Road. Drivers were forced to take alternative routes.
About 7.30am a handful of trams were allowed over the crossing when an emergency manual procedure was put in place.
The problem also affected trains to Chester which use the same track through Navigation Road.
Annoying
People queuing at Brooklands Station were unhappy about the delay.
Bank worker Steve Rose, 42, said: "It's a pain and it's annoying.
"You would think in this day and age with all the technology available a sensible way could be found to prevent this type of accident at a level crossing which appear to be happening on a fairly regular basis."
Law student Lloyd Moss, 27, said: "I suppose the delay could be worse but that doesn't make it any better. What angers me is that something like this can have such an effect on the service."
Housewife Sue Byron, 31, said: "I've actually got a job interview in Altrincham and I thought it would be easier to catch the tram rather than drive.
"I'm praying I'm not late because that's not the ideal way to make a first impression."

Blame mad drivers that ignore signals on a daily basis. They should put cameras there to catch the idiots .. pedestrians as well, that often jump over the barriers when they are down.
