Brady: Myra and I planned suicide

MOORS murderer Ian Brady has claimed he and Myra Hindley had a failed plan to kill themselves if cornered by police.

And the killer, who has been on hunger strike for more than six years, said he was jealous of Hindley's death following a chest infection in 2002 at Highpoint prison, Suffolk.

In letters from Ashworth Secure Hospital on Merseyside, revealed today, he says: "Yes, I envied Myra's death. We planned to exit by gunshot if cornered beyond salvage. But the revolvers and rifle were upstairs and I was in bed downstairs when the police poured in through the back door." The couple were jailed for life in the 1960s for killing Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edwards Evans, 17.

Brady was also convicted of murdering John Kilbride, 12. Years later, the couple confessed to killing Keith Bennett, 12, and 16-year-old Pauline Reade.

Mystery

But despite searches of the vast tract of moorland and a tireless campaign by Keith Bennett's mother Winnie Johnson, now 72, the little boy's final resting place remains a mystery. His is the only body not found.

The grieving mum says she wants the authorities to keep Brady alive because he is her only hope. He has said he could point out the spot where Keith is buried if taken on the moors.

Meanwhile, police say they will do all they can to find Keith's body if any fresh information comes to light.

In the 1980s, Brady and Hindley were taken to Saddleworth Moor to see if they could pinpoint where the bodies of their victims lay. They failed. Police later found Pauline's body.

Hindley drew maps of where she thought the couple had parked their car on the A635 when Keith died. But Brady has said maps would be of no use.

if he's been on hunger strike for 6 years how come he's not dead yet? does the MEN not care about the feelings of the families of the murdered children when publishing these trivial and meaningless stories? the only time I ever want to hear this creature's name again is when he's good and dead, when I shall go out and celebrate, just as I did when his partner died.

Suffering is too good for this evil person. He must be kept alive, I hope he lives to 100. Even better, 200.

That means David Smith was right to fear for his life. If he is to be believed which I doubt, Ian Brady is saying he dismisses the drawings made by Myra as factual?

Ian Brady knows I am going to strategic places and with some method. Locals know that too. The reason he has replied now is that word has got back from Glasgow of my researching his home town and time in the archives. It was a revelation to see what they have done to the Gorbals area over the past 40 years.

I wonder to myself, do I use the psychic route that is not factual, or do I use both. The sheer disbelief of that person 'coming in' has been with me for four years. The drawing is discussed and reviewed by many. But Ian has so many twists and turns it is criminology and good policing that will resolve this.

Ian Brady is said to have poor eyesight, yet he wants to go back to the Moors to as he says find the last body. Is that a reply Mr Brady to my letter? Keith Bennett is thought to be one of many more by some. But as the letter shows and research, the word sight is night. He paced the spots at night. Who will let him loose on the half mile tract at night?

This year God willing without you Mr Ian Brady, Keith will be found.
