You can run down kids, not stop and be bailed to appear when caught (sometimes)..does this not show how crazy this system is.

Bring back the stocks then we can all pelt Kelly, Blair and Brown and clones legally.

It was an egg for god sake, done by many thousands of school children every year.

This was a high publicity stunt by the Real Fathers For Justice and it has got all of that. I am surprised no one has reported that the accused stood up in court after being remanded again and shouted, "I am spartacus" and reply from 30+ supporters in the public gallery returned with, " NO! I am spartacus".

get real CPS, drop the case, stop wasting money, and save yourself a lot of money.....

A General comment here there was no mention the only reason he was remanded, was because they said he broke his bail condition by throwing the egg. His bail conditions were only to appear at court for a previous demonstration. His words that he said at the end ring true "I'm Sparticus" and then after the same came from around the viewing gallery.

The justice system again eh? If it was a prank on someone who wasnt a minister, would all this fuss and waste of public money be spent on it? Think not. The CPS (Criminal Protection Service) cant bring a case against yobs, killers, rapist, armed robbers etc, etc, etc. But they can get it right when someone throws an egg? Beyond belief.

I don??TMt care what people say about throwing eggs and whether in your own moral opinion it is a violent act or not. Regardless of people own views and how far they??TMd go to expose an inept MP or party Policy, the fact remains that throwing an egg at someone does not qualify for a custodial sentence, and Mike D should have bailed. This is yet another example of the system taking on the easy targets, and trying to silence the growing visual pain and anger of Britain??TMs fathers. Sorry but locking one dad up for campaigning for children and fathers rights to have a relationship will do more to fuel the anger than quell it. As a taxpaying member of the public I think it is abhorrent that a peaceful campaigning activist who fights for such a worthy cause is being locked up with hardened criminals and drug dealers for trying to expose the failings of this Government, and their family and education policies. The lad has a job and is remanded for a trivial charge....meanwhile...all over the rest of Greater Manchester persistant burglars and thieves are bailed.

This is just ludicrous! A decent caring father throws an egg at a minister and he is incarcerated in Strangeways for three weeks! Ministers hurl hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers monies in the form of munitions into Afghanistan, Iraq and whoever is next in the queue - and they are still in office. This is despite the majority of population being against waging an illegal war. The ruling elite appear to be the greatest danger to Britain at the moment with their continued destruction of nuclear families and family life, a pandemic of political propaganda pumped out in the media 24 hours a day, having us believe we are lucky to have survived another day! The continual undermining of men with misinformation leading the public to beleive all men are violent child abusers. It is time the ordinary people put a stop to this madness - it is just a matter of time before writing a complaint in a newspaper will lead you to a holiday in Strangeways.

This is an outrage. The system is proving how biased it is in its reaction to this so called crime. This man is a hero, and there are people all over the world watching this case and rooting for the underdog. I hope the court realizes that it is the one with egg on its face-the court is fooling no one.

Recently a man was found not guilty at the Central Criminal Court in London for murdering his step-daughter. When he was released he was set upon by three women who punched, kicked and abused him. This happened in front of a huge contingent of police officers, press and members of the public. NONE OF THOSE WOMEN WERE ARRESTED.

Now we have a case of a man throwing an egg at a female who has been responsible for allowing paedophiles to work in schools with children (It beggars belief!) and who is one of those responsible for keeping fathers from their kids for ideological reasons and he is instantly jailed!

When people wake up to what is going on in this country -- how their families are being deliberately destroyed by the radical feminist influence in schools, government, Uni's, councils and the media and so on -- I hope they will stand up and say that they are not going to allow it any more. If they do not, then they will only have themselves to blame as family and therefore, social order, breaks down.

The fury and rage we are seeing in this country among men and fathers is reflected all around the world and the Internet is a mirror of that rage. This incident is just another case of a man pushed too far and the State coming down heavy to try and deter others. They did the same to the suffragettes who burnt down buildings, smashed windows in the House Of Commons, poured acid over golf greens, slashed works of art etc.

This case and the defence of our brother in court after the egg mission against Ruth Kelly is being watched by activists from all over the world.

The charges of assault against our brother Sparticus are not only ridiculous but groundless and are issued only as a way of denying him his rights. His actions were anything but an assault.

Ludicrous, absolutely ludicrous. A friend of mine was viciously beaten and left for dead. In hospital for over 3 months by someone who was on bail at the time. This offender was still freed on bail (again). Why does this man get remanded for a minor crime such as this yet someone on a charge of attempted murder (who is already on bail for GBH) gets bail again.

The magistrates for this case should be taught to suck eggs, as they have not got a clue about proportionality. Perhaps we should blame Education Minister Ruth Kelly for their inability to understand that you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelette. Yes I am sure she is shell shocked and it is not nice to be embarrassed and humiliated by having such a political yardstick as an egg plonked on your head by a disgruntled member of the public, but to lock the protestor away for equivalent time you would lock up someone who wilfully attacked someone with a knife, or robbed an old ladies possessions is obscene. I fully support the efforts of hard working dedicated dads like Mr Downes to raise awareness of the plights children and fathers find themselves in when the increasing common norm of parental separation becomes a way of destroying lives. Divorce and separation can make good eggs turn bad, and it is often those floating to the top of a failing justice system that are unfit ingredients in the family pie.

To remand Mike Downes in prison for cracking an egg on Ruth Kelly's head, given that she herself stated she was unhurt and wasn't pressing charges, was over the top in the first place. To remand him in custody for at least a further 2 weeks pending a pre trial review on 28 Feb is absolutely ludicrous. If Mr Downes was a danger to Ms Kelly or the public he had ample opportunity to show it when he walked calmly up to her and broke his egg- he could have kidnapped her or killed her, such was his opportunity, he didnt, peaceful protest was his intent, delivered in a time-honoured fashion. The cost of those 2 eggs, 30p, the cost to the tax payer at least A#3000 for 3 weeks remand plus farcical policing levels at Trafford Magistrates Court yesterday, and Ms Kelly wasn't even scheduled to appear! Then there will be benefit costs if Mr Downes business is affected by his absence. Mr Downes was not currently affected by any bail conditions, he has never missed reporting in for bail hearings, nor has he ever missed a court appearance yet, by his next court hearing, which is only to set a trial date, so could also involve further remand time in prison, he will already have served 3 weeks in prison. In the mean-time, paedophiles may play with our children in school, thanks to Ms Kelly and her government friends, and burglars, muggers, rapists and murderers are on our streets because of the massive overcrowding levels in our prisons. It beggars belief and further highlights the need for in-depth checks to be kept on the efficiency and justice levels inherent in our legal system. Meanwhile, maybe you need to ask why people like Mike Downes feel so compelled to protest against the failings of an archaic, unjust and secretive family law system in the first place. Look into the workings of the system yourself and you will see just what misery and desperation causes parents to commit suicide because their children are denied the right to see them, and why a system which is responsible for high numbers of youth suicide and mental health problems, and increase in juvenile crime and anti-social behaviour, and a failing education system is allowed to continue to destroy the lives of many of our country's children by failing to look at their long term best interests, as recognised by many psychologists and the Children's Act 1989, and ensuring that they have not only both of their parents in their lives but also the rest of that parents entire family. How can we expect well-balanced children to function in a well-balanced society when we remove half of the childs family from their lives with one stroke of a pen.

Govt conspiracy to suppress legitimate protest?

How can a person be kept in jail for weeks on end for merely throwing an egg in protest at a minister?

There are a constant stream of neer-do-wells who are caught burgling, mugging, drink-driving, stealing cars etc - who are NOT kept in cells for weeks on end awaiting a trial like this father's protester.

I don't normally believe in conspiracy theories but this nonsense is making me think long and hard.

How ludicrous to take such extreme action against Mr Downes when parents, usually mothers, breach contact orders drawn up in the family courts every day - AND NOTHING IS DONE ABOUT IT. 'Beaten with an EGG -? Oxford Dictionary definition of 'beat': 'strike repeatedly or persistently'. Has anyone ever managed to 'beat' anyone or anything with an egg??? Seems to me that the justice system is completely 'scrambled'!

I have a truly evil ex-wife who just loves to disrupt my time with my son,even 5 years after she divorced me...fo no good reason.

She repaetedly breaks court orders and I take her back and back only for useless district judges to not even reprimand her.

Ruth Kelly deserves all she gets until she sorts the mess that is the family justice system out.
