Salford soup kitchen goes cold

A SOUP kitchen at Salford Cathedral which provided health services for hundreds of people is to close after 15 years.

The Diocese of Salford is redeveloping the site - and its staff cannot find anywhere else to go.

The drop-in centre - a charity - was started by nuns from the Society of Holy Child Jesus. Co-ordinator Paula Goergen said: "People come here from across Greater Manchester for medical services, a cheap, tasty meal and good advice. We feel let down by the diocese because we weren't given enough time to find a new place, or consulted about the plans."

Many of the Cathedral Centre's clients will now go to Cornerstone, a drop-in centre in Hulme, although it has no medical services.

The Diocese said it had offered to delay the building work but the centre could not find alternative premises.

Salford Diocese and Bishop Brain should be ashamed of themselves. This is one of the most un christian acts by the church I have ever witnessed.
They have done nothing to help and support this needed project.
