A PET shop owner was stunned to find markings spelling out Allah in Arabic on the body of a tropical fish.

A customer spotted the markings on the side of an Oscar fish in a tank at Walker Aquatics in Waterfoot, Rossendale.

The fish is also believed to have the word Mohammed in markings on its other side.

An unnamed Asian man immediately bought the fish for '10 and a '700 tank, the most expensive in the shop, for it to live in.

Shop owner Tony Walker said he would honour the man's offer for the fish but believed it could be worth thousands.

Series

It is the latest in a series of mysterious religious references and markings found on fruit, vegetables, and everyday household items.

Last February, a man in Texas claimed to have found the face of Jesus in scratches on his frying pan.In 2000, a school dinner lady in Wigan cooking a steak and kidney pudding saw the face of Jesus in its foil wrappings.

In Manchester in 1998, an aubergine was cut open to read Allah in the pattern of its seeds. In 1996 in Senegal, a farmer discovered a melon with mysterious markings appearing to spell Allah and a similar fish with apparent Allah markings was also found in America in 1997.

The South American fish and can grow up to 16 inches long and weigh up to three pounds.

Reading what's going on with the press in Denmark and the rest of Europe, isn't this fish blasphemous? If so, a fatwa will shortly be declared.

What I want to know is how the people claiming to have found likenesses of, e.g., Jesus, Mary et al, know who the 'likeness' is of - since no-one knows what any of these people looked like, assuming that they ever existed...

These stories of the word "Allah" appearing on fish, tomatoes etc etc are appearing with increasing regularity. Maybe we are due a second coming, a divine intervention, a new age in religion........or.... maybe some shops wish to seek some free publicity and increased sales amongst the growing and increasing prosperous Muslim community.
It's all become very tedious

While one has to be careful in giving credence to images and writings on objects and animals, it is possible God is finding ways to say that people are divided and God isn't. As a Catholic I can say that perhaps God is saying 'I am, I exist and please live your lives according to that fact.' Whether we call God 'Allah' or Father He is the same merciful God of all. All those who are truly merciful are sons and daughters of God in the spiritual sense. And while Christians believe in Jesus as Son of God it doesn't detract from this true unity among the followers of the great religions of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. If, through nature, among other ways, God says He exists and loves all members of the human family regardless of beliefs and DIVISIONS then people should take a lesson from that.

By the way, the head, 'Meet a Fish called Allah' is offensive, although I'm sure that wasn't the intention of the M.E.N.

It is not the first time we are seeing this type of miracle, but we must understand that it is first time we are experiencing a miracle of God OR Allah when the media is making headline of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) picture. I think it is a reminder to ignorent people that prophet Muhammad PBUH are not distant from God/Allah.

The title of this article is badly chosen. Nothing should be given the name of Allah except Allah Himself. The title could be changed to "A fish with the name of Allah on it".

If it had happened in the Islamic world, I woould expect an outright rejection from colleagues from the other faith. Perharps, Allah says in the Qur'an:

"We will show them Our signs in all the regions of the earth and in their own souls, until they clearly see that this is the truth ..." (Surah Fussilat, 41:53)

'No Need to Know', Whats your problem? Offensive remarks made by me and a Mr Manpal? This is a debate on a story and we are allowed to have an opinion. Be constructive, join in and have a say. This story is about a fish with some markings on it, that resemble some letters that resemble the Arabiq spelling for Allah! Please lighten up, you are not painting a good picture of tollerence in the light of the current climate! Chill dude, peace love and understanding! Remeber, 'to err is human, to forgive is devine'! Now forgive me for saying that they are spots on a fish, not a devine intervention by a much higher and powerful being! Thanks for letting me have an opinion MEN.

Ok, you have no right oto call that fish allah.NO-ONE and i mean NO-ONE should be called allah except for allah himself.if you ask me this is stupid.just because allah is written on the fish in arabic doesn't mean that allah is trying to give a message thru a fish and it also doesn't mean that the fish has to be called allah.
