He didn't mean to kill her? What the heck did he think the outcome of his actions were going to be on a fragile 3 year old? He should be done for murder, regardless of what he'll admit to. He should also be castrated to stop him ever having kids (or the will to want to procreate!) and Courtney's mum should be sterilised to prevent any more poor children being born to her.

Scum - They both should be sterilised to ensure neither of them can be responsible for bringing any more innocents into this world. 10 years is nowhere near enough. Even if he didn't intend to kill to torture an innocent little girl is unforgivable. The poor baby never stood a chance. I hope they both get 'justice' inside.

Why do these scummy women keep breeding, producing kids that they dont want or care about and have a succession of 'uncles'. This pair are evil beyond belief.

10 years beggars belief !! the ordinary hard working people of this country are getting sick of filth like this breathing the same air , no doubt some social worker will say what a bad childhood he had and he will be out in five - i have always thought that capital punishment was not an option but how can anyone say this excuse for a human being who kills an innocent child deserves to carry on living .

A man of 22 getting 10 years for what he has done is a disgrace. How could he have not known that his actions would have ended in this girls death. I hope that the other prisoners treat him in a similar manner to his treatment of this poor child. If the courts cant bring justice, perhaps others will.

If animal owners treat their animals badly they are banned from keeping animals in the future. Does any such ban exist for 'parents' like these? And I use the term 'parents' loosely.

prison is not the right answer. Put the mother and rees in a room for half an hour, send the real father and his mates in there (armed with sticks) and let them implement their own justice. If these two low lifes are still alive after the half hour let me at them.

reading about the guy that got the lethal injection in the usa yesterday, i pretty sure most people would love to see that kind of justice here, but there are to many goodie twoshoes in this country!!
they deserve nothing in life the scum of a mother and deadleg of an animal boyfriend.
personally i would use a can of petrol and a match on him, and listen to his screams for help, just like the kiddie he murdered did!!!

I am absolutely disgusted and appalled by what this man got away with. That poor little girl deserved so much better. May he and the mother rot in hell.

I am a trainee solicitor and even though the charge was dropped to manslaughter, life sentence was still an option left open to the Judge as manslaughter was only brought in to stop mentally ill (that has to be proven in law not the medical view) people receiving the death penalty in years gone by. They would claim diminished reasonability and would get only get a life sentence. This sentance is beyond belief you can get over 10 years for armed robbery or assault it is a discrace we can only hope that people in side assault him and if were lucky he might die a slow painful death! My personal view is he should be skinned alive and thrown into a big pit of salt!!!!!!!!

My daughter was friends with Courtney in school and all the parents and children were told of this by the Teachers on our return from the Christmas Break - It was sickening for us to hear let alone a class of 35 3 to 4 year olds aswell. All the small children lit candles for Courtney at achool and us parents were just totally choked to think we had shared the same air as that woman waiting for the doors to open at 8.55am. Courtney was a beautiful little girl who did not deserve this and I hope that HER and HIM get the same treatment they gave to Courtney.
This is heartbreaking for all who knew Courtney. RIP Sweet little Angel xxxxx

Once again the British justice system fails us completely. Ten years is nothing for a child killer. We should bring back hanging and Ill gladly pull the lever. Every decent citizen should hunt him down and take revenge!

It really does beggar belief that this man can commit such a horror to an innocent child and 'get away with it' A measley 10 yr sentance within a protected wing of a prison, followed by release under a new identity to continue with his life as he see's fit. Where's the justice for Courtney who suffered more than any child should ever have to, her family who have to deal with the prospect of life without their shining star, and to the rest of the HUMAN race who are just plain and simply sickened by the state of the Great British 'Justice' System

I have never made any comments on news stories before but feel I needed to on this as its absolutly disgusting that BOTH of these people didn't recieve life sentences, the mother who allowed this to happen to an innocent child is as sick as the violent scum she let into their lives, a perfect example as to why the death penalty should be introduced again for these two, It has sickened me to the core. The comment made on this site about skinning him alive and throwing him into salt was the best idea I have heard! I hope when they do get out of prison and show their faces that the public will be their jury.

Like all other commentors on this story, i am left speechless at the sentence passed on this man. Maybe the crown prosecution service felt that they would not secure a conviction for murder in this case, and so accepted this man's plea bargain? I would like to point out that I am of the unshakeable belief that any 12 people in Manchester, chosen for jury service in this case, would would have heard the shameful, sickening facts involved, and returned a guilty verdict of murder within a matter of minutes. To expose a girl, little more than a toddler, to the catalogue of injuries and abuse that Gareth Rees did would lead - in any right-thinking person's mind - to only one conclusion: her death. That's murder in my book, plain and simple. With that verdict he could get the sentence he deserved: 25 years with no possibility of parole.
It is also a pity that he can't be taken into St Peters square and given 25 lashes, prior to serving his custodial sentence. I am equally sure that there would be a queue of people willing to administer this punishment. Abuse of children puts people on the same level as a cockroach in my book
