Mike Kilbane, divisional manager for probation hostels in Greater Manchester, believes publication of details contained in the sex offenders' register would lead to vigilante action against sex perverts and drive them underground.
The M.E.N. revealed yesterday there are 1,158 sex offenders on the register living in Greater Manchester - with 52 considered sufficiently dangerous to be monitored daily by teams of specialists.
The figures have already led to renewed appeals for all information contained in the register - including perverts' names and locations - to be made available to the public to highlight potential threats posed by offenders.
But Mr Kilbane insists the government is right to resist such calls and reckons the public need to start showing more trust in the way the police and probation services handle sex offenders on release from prison.
He told the M.E.N. today: "By naming and locating sex offenders, you are not only putting them at risk from vigilante action, but others too."
Yesterday's M.E.N. carried two articles about the shock figures. Page One said this was a register of sexual perverts and Page Eight said they were paedophiles. The information on Page One was correct but we apologise for the mistake on Page Eight.
