NEW York firefighter Lieutenant Thomas Gogarty sent a message to the people of Manchester on the anniversary of the September 11 tragedy:
TO the wonderful people of Manchester, England.
Hello again to my second favourite city in the world. Along with Lieutenant Joseph Torrillo, who nearly lost his life on September 11 aiding in the rescue efforts, I had the honour to visit your city representing the New York City Fire Department to participate in your charitable efforts on behalf of the 343 fallen members of the NY City Fire Department.
As the anniversary of the worst catastrophe in the history of my country approaches, I reflect back on the unimaginable situation that happened in the United States and the aftermath of how we have rebounded from this disaster that occurred and affected so many of my fellow citizens, some of them very close friends.
I would first like to thank your city for all that you have done. The hard work that all involved put in to raise money for the unfortunate families of the victims of the New York City Fire Department to make life after this tragedy a little more bearable will forever be remembered in the hearts of all involved.
Due to the generosity of people like you, the families of the members who lost their lives will never have to worry about funds for clothing, education, food and any other expenses involved in living as full a life as possible despite the loss of a loved one.
Grief
It does not replace the loss of "daddy'', but softens the grief that these people must endure. Speaking for them I thank you all very much for what you have done.
The city of New York is still suffering from the ill-effects of the demonic episode that was bestowed upon them affecting so many lives in many ways.
We are trying to endure the misfortune but are constantly reminded of the tragic event, whether it be a picture, a widow, an orphan or a face that reminds one of a lost soul. It will take a lifetime to get over this ordeal that has changed the lives of not only New Yorkers and Americans but good people all over the world that are so used to living a life of freedom.
Although we suffer, we have grown stronger and have grown to appreciate each other and the simple good things in life that we have always taken for granted: a hug, a handshake, a smile from a child, a precious moment with a loved one.
As far as Joseph and myself go we have been friends for over 20 years as a result of fulfilling a dream and an ambition that we both were blessed with, that of being a New York City fireman and later becoming officers to lead the newer members who were living the same dream we were now completing.
Friendships
"Little did we know that our careers would take us to a city in England to graciously accept a kind effort from a grand bunch, and despite the loss we suffered, which is immeasurable, friendships have blossomed.
We will forever cherish the warmth you people sent our way and will never forget what you have done for our brother firefighters and their families. I will thank all and not mention names in fear of forgetting one.
Lieutenant Joseph Torillo will more than likely have to retire due to injuries sustained on September 11 2001. He still suffers dizziness and other symptoms as a result of these injuries.
I had to retire due to injuries sustained at an isolated fire incident prior to September 11. We both, as all firefighters all over the world, loved our jobs and enjoyed the privilege of serving the people in the city of New York.
We will miss doing what we were so lucky to get to do and will forever miss the fallen heroes who gave their lives last September. May they all rest in peace and may their loved ones seek solace in the comfort and love that the good people of the world have sent their way.
Thank you Manchester, England. Hope to see you all again.
