It's a Blue Christmas

OPERA singer Jon Christos features on a new Christmas CD dedicated to Manchester City.

The CD, Manchester City - The Album, will be released later this month and includes the roar of real fans.

Among the 18 tracks are two versions of Blue Moon - both a raucous calypso and the full version in a traditional jazz-crooner style by tenor Jon.

Spiced up with commentary of goals, other songs include Amazing Grace and a tongue-in-cheek slice of opera - Funniculi Funnicula (City Til I Die).

One of the executive producers of the work is Perry Hughes, Jon's manger, and the man who launched Russell Watson's career.

Jon, from Monton, Eccles, whose album Northern Light is in the top ten on the classical chart, said: "I had three ambitions in life: to make an album, sing in front of thousands of people in Manchester, and sing on the pitch at City.

"Soon I will have achieved all three as I am due to sing Blue Moon at a home match within the next few weeks.

"I was four-years-old when I went to my first game. We beat Ipswich 2-1. To be involved in this album is unbelievable."

Jon sang for Alex Ferguson at a party held at Old Trafford, but wore a full City strip for the rehearsal, and then City tie and cufflinks for the actual performance.

He will perform tonight in Albert Square for the switching on of the Christmas Lights.

Perry, who has linked up with Sanctuary Records to co-produce the album with Rick Blasky, said: "When I heard that there were plans to bring out a City Album I had to get involved. I wanted to make sure it had credible cool, which is what City are all about, and was not cheesy. I think we have done that. It is something that can be played in the car on or the coach and get you in the mood for match day.

"In order to get a genuine feel we invited 70 true City fans to the ground and recorded them chanting. Jon was choirmaster for the day."

Six months in the making, it was City legend Mike Summerbee who smoothed the way with the club to get its endorsement for the album. Other anthems that appear include City, The Best Team In The Land, Hello Hello We Are The City Boys, and The Great Escape.

Jon said: "I have watched City through thin and thinner and this is a great time to be a City fan, the album captures that."

The CD will be released on November 28th.

I look forward to hearing this album, City are on the up, yes we have a long way to go but finally we're going in the right direction. I've heard about Jon Christos, sounds like he's going to be a megastar, lets get behind him and keep the blues on top. I'm gonna buy his album for sure, I'd rather a blue be on top than a red like that Watson fella who only seems to stab everyone in the back. Up the blues and nice one City.

Just for once, would it be possible to actually have an article about Jon Christos without mentioning Russell Watson.

I sang on the track as part of the crowd. We are the real stars of the album (Although Jon has a brill voice) as we stamp city all over it. Here more of Reg @ www.regwhite.co.uk

The Man City Album is a real credit to the club and the musicians and producers who worked on the album with fantastic arrangements of songs all City fans know and love. Fans involved with crowd chanting were proud to be involved, I too was one of them but the real stars of the album are the likes of Stephen Rigby, Perry Hughes, Jon Christos and other passionate City fans producers and musicians who worked tirelessly on this project and with a genuine love of the club. Without them I doubt this album would have been credible and I applaud the fact they've kept a real Manchester vibe to it. Of all club albums released to date it is the best by far too.
