FORMER Coronation Street star Adam Rickitt wants to be a Tory MP.
The 27-year-old, who played Nick Tilsley in the soap, is on an approved list of Conservative candidates after impressing party bosses, it was confirmed today.
He must now apply to a constituency and convince local Tories he is the man to win their seat before he can stand at the next General Election.
A Conservative Party spokesman said: "He is on an approved list of candidates, but he hasn't been selected."
Blond Rickitt, 27, took over the role of Weatherfield's floppy-haired heart-breaker Nick in 1997.
The young star became a gay icon, sharing the soap's first gay kiss with Todd Grimshaw, played by co-star Bruno Langley.
Privately-educated Rickitt, who attended Kingsmead Prep School on the Wirral, then Sedbergh School in Cumbria, finished his education with four A-levels and worked as a model before passing his audition for Coronation Street.
Law
Adam stunned his family when he abandoned plans to study law at university and opted instead for a career in showbiz.
He spent 15 months on the soap, marrying the Street's bad girl Leanne Battersby, played by Jane Danson, before leaving in 1999 to pursue a pop career.
His first single, I Breathe Again, went straight to the Top 10 at number five, but his career failed to take off.
Rickitt has appeared in gay magazine Attitude. He is currently mountain-climbing in South America and unavailable for comment.
He returned to the Street in July 2002 for a short visit and reprised his role as Nick Tilsley to attend the wedding of his mother Gail Platt to the Street's serial killer villain, Richard Hillman.
While in Weatherfield, hairdresser Maria Sutherland caught his eye and they were soon involved in a passionate relationship.
Two years ago television watchdogs backed Coronation Street's decision to show its first gay kiss after rejecting complaints about the scene.
The Independent Television Commission dismissed 21 objections from viewers who expressed concern over the scene with Nick and Todd who was engaged to his sister Sarah.
The watchdog said the storyline had not breached the programme code governing commercial broadcasters, despite going out before the 9pm watershed.
Would you vote Adam Rickitt in as your MP? Have your say.

Forgive me, he wasn't exactly a great singer, was he? nor a spectacularly good actor... politician????????????
Do excuse me while I laugh hysterically. I think I'll be taking careful note of this joker and seeing which side up he lands.
I just hope he's got his bottom padded for the inevitable :-)
I always knew he was a loser...
He IS joking isn't he? no way..he has no charisma at all and is not very approachable or friendly..
Mr Rickitt has been long-listed not short-listed. It is hard to imagine any real life constituency association shortlisting never mind selecting him. Then again he may have some policy ideas which he consistently holds. In which case he would be doubly ahead of ANY Lib Dem we have in the North West. The Tories selected the wealthy young socialite Letitia Cash (daughter of their MP Bill Cash) to stand in Salford Central. I suppose this shows that they have a sense of humour as her It girl, eligible bachelor-girl characteristsics are not in demand even in the new Salford.

Why not? Adam is an eloquent, well-educated man with a background as a dedicated hard-worker. The entertainment industry is an extremely tough one and Adam has held his own in this competitive space. It can only help to have a young man of his calibre as an MP. And the fact that he has always been in the spotlight will help rather than hinder his career.
