One in four workers complained that pressure had reached harmful levels often causing ulcers, heart attacks or strokes.
A survey of 2,500 employees by office stationery supplier Esselte showed that half complained their workload was too heavy.
Two out of five said their boss was unreasonable; often expecting them to work when they were ill and a third were set "unrealistic" targets.
Barry McCool, of Esselte, urged firms to improve their organisation to help tackle the psychological dangers of stress.
