Heywood Road Service Station is selling unleaded for £1.06 a litre, but the owners say they have had no choice but to raise prices following the latest oil crisis.
The family-run business is open 24-hours and relies on petrol sales for almost all its income.
A spokesman for the garage said the business only made six pence profit on the sales and couldn't afford to undercut larger chains. He said: "When we buy the petrol it's nearly 99 pence when you add VAT, so we are making hardly any money on it."
Oil prices have surged following Hurricane Katrina, which tore apart much of America's oil-producing infrastructure.

Hi,
All the talk at the moment is of fuel prices it seems. With that in mind, I am developing a website which hopefully will help people find the cheapest petrol on their route or on their daily commute.
It allows people to view and report petrol prices in a very simple way, it also produces maps which have current prices and are displayed using Google Earth (If you haven't seen Google Earth it's well worth a look http://earth.google.com).
Since starting the project, I have found other sites that record and report petrol prices, but none yet that provide the information geographically (other than by region).
The site is TaxiGas.co.uk and although aimed primarily at cabbies (those perhaps with most to gain from the site), anyone can use it including petrol station managers for reporting their own prices.
Best Regards,
Richard Bagnall
