Shock death of superfit crash cyclist

A SUPERFIT athlete has died a month after his leg was broken in a hit-and-run accident on a dirt track.

Graham Richards, 50, was struck by a black Renault Clio on a path lined by hedgerows as he took a short-cut home.

After the incident, on June 25, he managed to call an ambulance from the scene off Boarshaw Lane, Middleton, and was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital, where he remained for a week.

He returned to his home in Chelford Close, Middleton, to continue his recovery, but was readmitted to hospital just over a week ago.

He died from a heart attack caused by a blood clot that had formed as a result of the car accident.

His brother, Colin Richards, said: "Graham's death has come as such a shock. He was one of the fittest 50-year-olds you could meet.

"He was devoted to cycling and triathlon and we all thought that if anyone could bounce back from an accident like this, he could.

"He was such a popular man who was well-known around the area that he lived in. He was close to his family and we will all miss him terribly."

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, which happened at 11pm, or knows who was driving the Clio, registration number J93 TVN, at the time, to come forward.

The Clio has not been reported stolen, but so far police have not been able to establish who the owner is.

Anyone with information should contact the Road Policing Unit at Rochdale on 0161 856 8073 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
