Shots fired in city centre

POLICE are hunting a gunman who fired off a volley of shots in the city centre this afternoon.

It happened at around 2.30pm after he got out of a black VW Golf in Quay Street.

Police say no-one is known to have been hurt at this stage, but they are mounting a full investigation.

As a result Quay Street, Byrom Street and Lower Byrom Street were closed to allow forensic experts to search for clues.

Police said that after the incident the gunman was seen climbing back into the car before heading off in the direction of Salford.

Manchester is turning into the Wild West. Is there nowhere that is safe now? Two gun incidents in the city centre in almost as many weeks. Unless the increasingly lawless state of the city is stemmed all work the great regeneration and redevelopment that is going on will be completely undermined.
