THE boom in city centre living has spread across the River Irwell into Salford.
Following the news that the proposed SnoWorld project on the banks of the river has been scrapped in favour of upmarket residences, plans have been unveiled for a £13m, 11-storey building next to the Lowry Hotel.
It will be on land between Sir Rocco Forte's five-star hotel and the vast Inland Revenue headquarters next to the stunning Calatrava Bridge.
The development by Persimmon City Developments will provide 71 luxury one, two, and three-bedroom apartments.
The same company was behind the acclaimed Morrison Street scheme in Glasgow, in which a Victorian listed building was refurbished and became the fastest selling apartment project in Scotland's history, achieving £12m sales in two weeks.
Marketing director, Andrew Storey, said: "This latest investment in the city centre will be one of our most prestigious projects to date. The specification and facilities will be fitting for its prime location."
The investment was secured by landowners Chapel Wharf Limited, a joint venture between Jarvis Construction, Salford City Council, and D.C. Thomson.
Regeneration
Jim Howie, of Chapel Wharf Limited, said: "We are delighted to have completed this deal, which is pivotal to the next stage of this area's regeneration, and it allows us to bring forward the next phases to complement the hotel and offices which are already here."
Bill Hinds, leader of Salford City Council, said: "Here is further evidence that the hard work done by the city council in partnership with Chapel Wharf to attract new private investment is paying off.
"Persimmon are a development company with a first class reputation, and their investment promises to unlock new potential from this excellent location.
"When we built the impressive Calatrava Bridge all those years ago, people wondered how it would benefit the city. But the direct link to the city centre has been the spur needed to attract the impressive Lowry Hotel, The Inland Revenue building and this new development."
Further developments in the pipeline for the location include an additional 175 apartments, multi-storey car park, and education facility.
