Local heroes in the picture

THE stalwarts of grassroots sport in Bolton gathered to have their pictures taken for a new piece of public art - the 85ft-high Spirit of Sport sculpture.

The trophy-shaped structure will tower over motorists in the middle of a roundabout near Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium at Horwich as a tribute to the town's sporting achievements.

It will be illuminated internally at night and covered with 960 mirrored glass panels. The Bolton public are being asked to nominate sportsmen, women and teams who have contributed to all types of sport in Bolton, and their images will be etched on to the panels.

Sessions

Bolton council hopes amateur coaches, groundsmen and a handful of famous faces will feature.

Nominees had their pictures taken at the first of a series of photo sessions at Bolton University so that images could be transferred on to the panels.

The faces of sporting legends from Bolton's past will also be used. Images will be taken from family albums. More sessions will be held next month.

The Spirit of Sport will cost '350,000. Most of the cash will come from the European Regional Development Fund and the North West Regional Development Agency.

The official unveiling will be in December.

What do you think of the structure? Have your say.

Has anyone considered the dangers of having an 85ft high mirrored object in the middle of a round about. By dangerous i am just thinking of reflected sunlight into drivers eyes etc during the day and in the winter time when we get the sun lower in the sky. has anyone taken this into consideration when planning this sculpture.

Rubbish location!

Agreed, Chris. That big of road is a nightmare at the best of times, without introducing additional obstacles.
