BIG Issue sellers in Manchester who misbehave will be banned from selling the homeless magazine under a new "three strikes and you're out" system.
And all homeless people are being stopped from selling it at night as part of a new move to ensure the public can feel completely comfortable when buying it in the streets.
Head of sales for the Big Issue, Andy Peers, said: "We've always banned vendors who don't follow our code of conduct for anything from a few hours to a week or even a permanent ban in extreme cases.
"However, it was very much down to the discretion of individual sales teams. Now we're introducing a policy that will apply across all of our offices.
Reassure people
"I hope this will reassure members of the public about the genuine status of our vendors who work very hard to sell the product in a responsible and professional manner."
According to the Big Issue in the North rules, those selling the magazine must only charge the cover price of £1, should not beg while selling it and not be aggressive to members of the public.
Anyone who breaks the rules will have three chances to improve their behaviour with help from a support team.
But if they fail to mend their ways after this they will be banned for good.
The ban on night-time selling will begin at eight o'clock each evening and will be enforced from the beginning of June.
The move follows a similar approach in Liverpool which helped cut down on complaints from the public.
Those vendors who are banned from selling the magazine will still be able to get help and support from the Big Issue organisation including education, training and health services.
