Gun-case teacher in job fight

FREED gun-case teacher Linda Walker has been backed by a leading councillor in her bid to keep her job.

Mrs Walker was freed on appeal this week after spending 36 days in prison for firing an air pistol near youths she claimed were harassing her family.

She faces a disciplinary hearing before she can return to work as a special needs teacher in Salford and experts say she will almost certainly lose her job.

But Tim Perkins, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said it would send out the wrong message to thugs if she was dismissed.

The Court of Appeal ruled this week that the mother of three's three-month sentence should be quashed and replaced with a 12-month suspended term.

But she was refused permission to challenge her convictions for affray and possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

A disciplinary hearing is expected to take place later this month to decide whether she will lose her job at New Park High School in Eccles. It should have taken place last month but was postponed because she was in prison.

The headteacher at the school, Almut Bever-Warren, and Salford Local Education Authority will meet to decide whether Mrs Walker should lose her job.

If she is sacked she would have the right of appeal to the school's board of governors.

Coun Perkins said: "I do not think Salford Council should continue with proceedings against her. The incident itself was outside her home, and not in her workplace. It also had extraordinary circumstances surrounding it.

"If Mrs Walker is punished further that would send out the wrong message to thugs. Also, the council needs to take into account her dedication to the school and special needs children."

Privately, education experts believe that the headteacher has only one option - to dismiss Mrs Walker.

One source said: "She is a teacher and has been convicted of a firearms offence. How can the school not act over that?"

Mrs Walker's family says she fired the air pistol outside her home in Urmston after suffering a two-year hate campaign by yobs, who they claim vandalised their garden, damaged their home and cars, and made threatening phone calls to the house.

Mrs Walker, 48, also faces an investigation by the Department for Education and Skills, who will decide whether her conviction classes her as a potential danger to children. Even if they take no action against her, the case will be referred to the General Teaching Council, who will decide whether the firearms convictions breach their code of conduct.

In a poll of Manchester Evening News readers yesterday, 82 per cent voted that Mrs Walker should be allowed to return to teaching.

I wouldn't want this woman teaching my child - especially not one with special needs, they require an inordinate amount of patience and understanding and are incredibly demanding. Linda Walker has demonstrated quite clearly that she does not possess those attributes required for such children, having handled this particular situation in such a terrible manner. We are talking of a firearms offence here, how more serious does it get?

As a parent of one of the children at New Park high, I whole heartedly support Mrs Walker and think she should be aloud back to teach at the school. She is a fantastic teacher, and has worked hard for the children at the school. She has always acted in a professional and excidingly patient way, no matter what situation has arisen. Mrs Walker must have been at the end of her tether to have acted in the way she did, but to take away a job she has commited her whole life to , is unfair.

the charges should be dropped based on the fact that an air rifle or air pistol is not by definition is not a Fire-arm.
the statement you country is sending to criminals is you need not worry about going to jail we only convict and sentance honest hard working people not thugs

Our world is upsidedown when a woman who was trying to stop criminals is punished for doing so, and then punished again by losing her career that she loves.

What are we to do here? Let yobs run society? Tell the politicians that all British citizens have the right to defend themselves with whatever is needed, including guns! British gun control has failed and should be abolished.

The school governers should really get a grip of themselves here. This sends out TOTALLY the wrong message to the thugs invloved. Too many of these commitees who make descisions like this are made up of people who do not live in the the real world. She should be reinstated without question!!
