POLICE have vowed to get tough to stop louts flouting a street-drinking ban.
Officers have been given special powers to stop yobs drinking alcohol on the street in urban areas of the borough to help them crack down on crime.
Latest police figures show there have been fewer reports of alcohol-related incidents in the town centre since the same initiative started there.
Superintendent Mark Granby said officers want to tackle the issue head on in the early weeks of the wider ban, which is set to come into force on Monday.
He said anyone in breach of the order is likely to be warned, but would get an on-the-spot fine if they catch an officer's eye a second time.
Persistent offenders could even get arrested and landed in court, said Mr Granby.
Those in charge of the operation are even considering deploying a dedicated booze-busting ban team that would swoop to confiscate alcohol from yobs.
A total of 170 signs enforcing the street-drinking ban were due to be put up across the borough from Monday.
Mr Granby said: 'The street-drinking ban is another vital tool in the box of frontline officers trying to reduce crime that hits at the heart of our community.
'Clearly it is not positive for our officers to be taken off frontline duties to be dealing with offenders, so the use of fixed penalty fines is a bonus.
'But persistent offenders are likely to be causing public order offences and officers will use their best judgement to see if an arrest is necessary.
'It has achieved results in the town centre and we will do what we can to make it a success across the borough.'

I am sick and tired off these do goody councils .who think they no whats best for us.instead off doing what they are payed to do ie run the council .
And im sick of drunken halfwits in the street.
The Police are enforcing this law because its neccesary, and part of running any council is law and order on the streets.
Do-goody .... does that mean not tollerating the scum in society .... yes it does, and thats why some people dont like it.
I disagree with K.Smith from Gorton, the council and the police have to stop all this anti-social behaviour that hits Manchester on a daily basis, from 7.00am to about 4.00am.
The problem I see is that it will not be the police that deals with but those poor Street Wardens!
