Metrolink bosses have refused to co-operate because it might give the transport system a bad reputation.
The M.E.N. revealed soap bosses were considering the shocking storyline earlier this year.
When the Street's ex-nanny Claire Peacock applied for a job as a tram driver, rumours were rife on internet message boards that it was to become a reality.
But the plot was shelved after transport bosses said they thought the crash would put the trams in a bad light.
Chris Mulligan, GMPTE's director general, said: "Following an approach from Granada Television, we made it clear that we would find any storyline involving a tram accident questionable.
"Given Metrolink's excellent safety record, we felt that such a sensationalist storyline would be both misleading and detrimental to the image of the network."
The show has denied that the decision was taken because of objections from transport bosses.
A Street spokeswoman claims they scrapped the crash because they had already had two traumatic storylines this year involving Mad Maya burning down the corner shop and Katy Nelson murdering her dad Tommy.
She said: "It was one of the storylines being mooted for the year and it was decided not to pursue it.
"We felt we'd had quite a lot of high-octane drama in the planning block it would have fallen into.
"It was simply a decision by the programme makers to have something more light-hearted instead.
"They decided on Les and Cilla's wedding, which will be no less a high production number."
Cheryl Hubbard from Serco Metrolink, which operates the system, said: "We were concerned because there were safety implications which they were planning to portray in a bad light.
"They contacted us and asked what it was like for our drivers during training, but because they were planning to then have her driving a tram off the viaduct we said if that's going to be the case we weren't happy with it at all.
"I think people in Manchester would also be unhappy about them portraying the specific Manchester tram system in this sort of light."
But Street bosses are still not ruling out reviving the crash as a storyline in the future.
The spokeswoman said: "It has just been put on ice for the time being."

How could a tram possibly crash into the Rovers...? That's at the other end of the street from the viaduct - it'd have to be doing some speed and then launch itself sideways through the brick wall of the bridge and then over about 6 or 7 houses, before landing on the Rovers! Any tram driver that can do that deserves a medal :)
It seems a little ironic, given that every single day there is a problem and some delay on the metrolink system (normally not specified where), that they should be concerned corrie will give them a bad reputation. I have spoken to a mterolink manager with my concerns (who happened to squeeze on to an over-loaded delayed tram) and ignored. So does metrolink listen to the fee-paying (just increased) customer? Sadly never. I would certainly have enjoyed seeing this rubbish network trashed on one of my favorite programmes.
Angry of Crumpsall!!
I am bemused by Metrolink's concern for a Corrie storyline's effect on its reputation. Does it not consider the effect of its own service on its reputation? I use the Manchester to Bury service regularly and have observed that the trams have become increasingly shaky while travelling at speed, to the point where it is now quite frightening. The proposed Corrie storyline did not seem too unrealistic!
Bothered about their reputation, do these people actually bother to travel on the trams, there's far more serious issues need addressing than seeing a tram crash on corrie. What about getting the over crowding sorted out, what about training those thugs, they call ticket inspectors trained.
May be corrie should have a story which reflex's a little more true to life even. One like somebody falling under the wheels of the tram, at Piccadilly gardens, because the thugs have blocked the exit, thus causing a crush and people falling off the platform into the path of an on coming tram!!. I'm sure HMRI would have some comments regarding the method statement use for that idea. Not that we the passenger would ever get a response from Metrolink.
"How could a tram possibly crash into the Rovers...?"
According to previous reports, the writers would have made it clear over time that there is, in fact, a second and separate tram viaduct behind the Rovers (as yet unseen by viewers) - on a different line and at the other end of the Street from the one we know and love.
Chris Mulligan, GMPTE's director general surely has more pressing matters to deal with than getting involved in Coronation St story lines.
You should be talking to the working people of Manchester who use your crumbling services & not to reporters & script writers. I wish I could talk to you & not the customer advisors I regularly have to complain to with their script written responses you supply them with.
Come on its only a soap, lets not over react. Next we will be frightened to pick up a wrench as we may consider wacking somebody over the head !
C'mon! How on earth can a tram possably crash into the rovers?!?! What did the writers have in mind?!?!? For the tram to crash off the viaduct before crusing all the way down the cobbles of Coronation St and ploughing into the Rovers?! Will all the cast coincedentaly peer out of their doorways to watch a huge tram crusing past the pavement! Somehow I think this is a little far fetched, however, it would keep the gossip in Rita and Norises Kabin going for years to come!!!! But please broadcast it! I'd pay good money to go and watch that episode, it sounds fabulous!
