Blue Peter garden (including pawprints of Shep) to be recreated by BBC in Salford - and will be open to the public

The Blue Peter garden is to be recreated in Salford Quays - and will be open to the public.

The garden will be built in the piazza in front of the BBC buildings at MediaCity, and not on a roof at the studios as previously planned.

BBC chiefs also plan to install several features from the original iconic garden designed by Percy Thrower at Television Centre in London.

They include the Italian sunken garden with fishpond, which features the handprints and pawprints of Lesley Judd, John Noakes, Simon Groom, Shep the border collie and Goldie the golden retriever, Jack and Jill the tabbie cats and Freda the tortoise, who were all on the show in 1978 when the garden was created.

There are also plans to move the bronze statue of Petra, Blue Peter's first pet, to the new garden on the green at Salford Quays.

Tim Levell, Editor of Blue Peter, said:  “We’re really excited about being able to open up the garden so Blue Peter viewers can come along and visit it – we wanted to make it as accessible to the public as possible.

“People from seven to 70 ask about the garden and by placing it in the  MediaCityUK piazza, members of the public can enjoy it and see first-hand Blue Peter memorabilia such as the Petra statue.

"Having filmed in the piazza and gardens recently, we know just how well these areas work for the show and we’re looking forward to doing more filming around the MediaCityUK campus, including the new garden area.”

The BBC has moved all children's programmes to Salford as part of the relocation to MediaCity.

Blue Peter, which has been broadcasting for 54 years and is the world's longest-running children's TV show, began broadcasting from Salford in September last year.

The original Blue Peter garden in London was not open to the public and was targeted by vandals in 1983 with intruders pouring oil into the fish pond, which killed some of the fish.

Correction = The Blue Peter garden is being built at BBC Media City here, today, NOW, by the side of the end tram line platform. The fish pond is constructed in stone and has been given a wire cover to combat the expected ravage of visiting herons looking for an easy picking from the imported fish life to be featured. It is good news for native Salford Quays fish who are learning from bad experiences to deal better with hungry predators.

Nice move! they should make a new time capsule. Just hope vandals don't wreck it

Are they going to exhume George the Tortoise from the original garden (died in 2004) and rebury him in the new one?

What's the odds on it lasting more than two weeks in salford?

Open to public, so (unamed) ex footballer does not have to help someone over the wall.

Unfortunately I share the views of many of the previous posters......it wont take long for the scrotes to shame the name of Salford yet again.

Wonder how long it will be before the BBC pull out and admit they`ve dropped a massive clanger with the move North?

Yeah ... really authentic.

as someone who spent 44yrs in salford and knows there are some very good people there.
i also know there are some not so nice ones who would wreck this garden just for the hell of it, and what makes it worse is if you found them and asked why, the answer you would get is " i dunno " i'm actually scared for this garden, salford is chainging and some people don't like it. i for one do.
