Two town halls are at loggerheads over plans to create a ‘mini-city’ at Salford Quays.
Salford council and developers Peel Holdings want a new ‘town centre’ to be built next to the BBC’s MediaCityUK headquarters.
But planning chiefs in Trafford – just metres away on the other side of the Bridgewater Canal – will oppose the idea.
They fear it will suck money out of the borough – and want more assurances that it does not pose a threat.
Salford council has earmarked the quays for the new development, which would be built over the next 20 years.
It is also considering a planning application from Peel, laying out its vision for the area.
Peel’s masterplan includes a civic square, park, skyscraper, hotel and 1,000 homes as well as shops and hundreds of offices.
The firm claims it will regenerate Salford’s inner city and create 15,000 jobs.
But a letter from Trafford’s planners to their Salford counterparts ‘respectfully objects’ to the planning application and Salford council’s strategy.
It says: “The identification of Salford Quays as a town centre could potentially impact on centres within Trafford and it is not clear what assessment has been carried out to take account of the impact on other centres.”
Peel say its plans – which are not due to be considered until March – fit in perfectly with the council’s strategy for Salford Quays and would represent stage two of Media City.
But Trafford planners say that part of the current MediaCity, including the new ITV headquarters, is in their borough, so they should have more input. They also want more restaurants, bars and community facilities to be included in the plans.
Peel Holdings declined to comment.
A spokesman for Salford council said: “We are aware that Trafford council has submitted an objection to one of the planning applications we have received.
“Like other planning objections, this will be taken into consideration by the panel when making their decision.
“As no decisions have been taken at this stage, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Toys. Prams.
It will all go crabs once Stockports £10billion masterplan for a cycle hire shop in Mersey Square comes to fruition, then everyone will leave Salford and Trafford and head to Stockport.
Opposing regeneration. Tut tut tut.
Just exactly where does Media City go into Trafford? Not the ITV Coronation Street set as it's over the bridge from Media City UK. Sour grapes me thinks.
What a stupid objection from the people who brought us the DUMPlington centre, the key to town centre decline! Surely a new 'city centre' area would bring them more customers and help increase demand for units in Trafford Park?
Or am I missing something?
You cannot makes a silk purse out a pigs ear, Salford always has been a dump and always will be.
Now now. Could this end up with the feared use of handbags at high noon ?
Yes Trafford, protect your borough and business. What about your residents? My friends from Trafford love coming to Salford every November for our cities firework celebrations. Why? Because you rely on everyone else doing something so you don't have to bother. There seems to be certain residents that always miss out.
What do Salfordians think about having a 'new' 'centre', never mind Trafford B.C.?
media city is in the city of salfrord a city traffrord has t5he dirty end of the stick trafford you are not a city so you cany have a media city
This is another non-article. All Trafford council have said is that they want to be involved more in the plans and certain assurances and that's fair enough. At the end of the day it will be good for Trafford residents too (more jobs)
Trafford Council.....I don't suppose your were moaning about some rather large shopping centre being built within your borough now were you?
Hypocrites.
Trafford should pursue amendments not opposition to the proposals. It will be good for everyone.
I do wholeheartedly agree with them on wanting more restaurants, bars and community facilities.
What Peel are in danger of creating is a shallow community.
Salford Quays will have nothing to with Salford by time the council and peel have finished.
Surely our councils NEVER talk to each other judging by the Chapel Street fiasco....? As regards Salford....any CENTRE would be better than Salford Precinct or the half buldozed desert that is around the Cathedral?! Has to be the ODDEST, and least city like, "CITY" anywhere. We do we go, when we "go into town"? Say no more?!
the 'centre' of salford shifted years ago - no-one can seriously claim that the precinct area is anything other than a hideous 1960's/70's high-rise sink estate these days, and has been for at least 2 decades. Whether Trafford council likes it or not, the old docks area has been urban regeneration in progress for at least a decade and already has a claim to call itself Salford'd 'centre'. The genie is already out of the bottle on this one - and good luck to it.
Trafford is the other side of The Manchester ship canal from Media City...not the Bridgewater canal.
Did Trafford give a monkeys about Eccles et al when it approved the TRAFFIC Center?
Salford appears to be moving West. Devouring greenbelt as it moves & leaving brown wasteland in it's wake to the East.
Maybe it's trying to put some distance between itself & Manchester.
Poor Trafford. No one wants to build substandard 'luxury' Mcflats and chain restaurants on their side of the canal. Boo and indeed hoo.
Why would you appose to the plans, Trafford & Salford are linked as if they are one. For example, Trafford Park and The Quays. Surely It will benefit both borough's as the Trafford Centre did too. This is good news for the whole of Greater Manchester as it creates jobs and is something to be proud of. Personally I think all Greater Manchester Boroughs should be under the name of Manchester, like London's borough's, then it would stop these petty disagreements as they would all be part of the same City!
