A woman has fallen through the ice at Chorlton Water Park while trying to rescue her dog.
It is thought that the woman stepped onto the frozen lake despite onlookers trying to stop her – and the ice gave way.
According to eyewitnesses posting on Twitter, people tried to help the stricken victim by getting a canoe from the warden's yard and attempting to pull her to safety.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire Service said that crews were called to the park on Maitland Avenue at around 11.50am. By the time they arrived the woman was out of the water.
She was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital.

how stupid is she?
How was the dog? A GOOD 99.9 PER CENT of dogs that end up in a frozen pond can generally find their way out. I hope the woman recovers well and learns from her error of judgement.
If she was just trying to meet people, that's one way to break the ice.
Lesson learnt...
If you're not a strong swimmer ... Don't walk on ice covered lakes.
Next.
to be fair, from looking at the photo i think i would have gone in for my dog. the ice is clearly not strong enough to hold anyones weight and not going to cause any problems getting out...if youre quick. i love dogs me
I'd do the same thing to save my dog as well. Not recommended, but instinct says go after it
How many times are we going to read stories like this each year? Not one animal is worth the life of a human or the lives that are put in danger trying to save that human, trying to save that animal. Learn the lesson please!
I would do exactly the same for my dog as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair any dog owner would do the same because they love their pet its as simple as that, stupid I know but when the moment happens you want to save your pet!
Remember dogs or whatever become part of the family and these posters coming on and suggesting that this lady was stupid dont live in the real world. Oh I see they would stand on the edge of the lake or wherever a watch their pet drown would they? I DOUBT IT!!!!! give this caring woman a break please.
EVERY time a story like this is on the news or being told in an over dramatic documentary they say that animals can take care of themselves if they go through the ice. It barely looked thick enough to support the geese let alone the dog, and even less so for the woman.
I thought dogs had to be kept on leads these days?
it may have had a poo on the ice. and she was going to pick it up, incase she got a fine.?
i understand she may well have loved it and her first reaction was to go on the ice to rescue the dog. but it could have ended in tragedy, and her family could now be mourning the loss of a daughter, mother, wife,
When I was a child of 7 I was tempted to walk on the ice covering Platt Fields park lake. Not suprisingly I fell in and my older brother dived in to rescue me. The upside is that I survived-and am very grateful-but the downside is that he never stops reminding me that he was a HERO!
I walk on there too hope she recovers and glad her doggy was ok we all make mistakes
I arrived at the water park today just as the rescue was taking place. There were a number of police vehicles, several fire engines and abulances all involved in this rescue caused by this stupid woman's actions. If she cannot control her dog and stop it from going into the water in the first place, then she should have kept it on a lead.
Another example of irresponsible dog owners. My garden is constantly soiled with the by-product of other peoples hounds.I photographed one dog walker and was called a silly cow!!!!...when I handed the evidence to the police for DNA samples they said it could not be done...why do I pay my taxes.....concerned of Chorlton
As an ex navy diver and PADI diving instructor ,I always cringe when i read stories about dog owners some, highly intelligent professionals who panic and throw all sanity out of the window, to rescue their dogs from frozen waters.I can say from experience and training,That the best swimmer in the world would struggle to "tread water" (stay afloat) in a frozen lake /pond etc wearing normal clothing. Its a combination of 1,you would almost immediately get cramp in your legs, the cold temps would cause this, thats your legs out of action ,its very painful, and almost impossible to straighten both legs, and 2,because most people jump in fully clothed the weight of the clothing is just to much ,and unfortunately that extra weight will pull the person under... As someone rightly pointed out nearly all dogs find a way to get out of the water
She should be thoroughly ashamed of herself. Her dog should have been on a lead in the first place and her stupidity has cost the tax payer a lot of money.
I agree with the last comment although it is my big sister so i need to go easy on her - Stewart Sydney Australia
I'm a dog owner and can understand that you could make a bad decision in a blind panic but prevention is better than cure just keep your dog on a lead when lakes and canals are frozen!!!
The lady who did this is my boss and also my friend. I agree it was a very dangerous act and thankfully she and the dog are ok. The dog was not her own but belongs to one of her clients, this shows the level of devotion she has for her work and animals. She IS NOT stupid as some may say, but brave and kind hearted. It was her natural instinct, anyone with a heart could not just stand by and watch a dog drown. The dog could NOT get out alone after many failed attempts and would not be with us today if it wasn't for her act of bravery. God forbid if she had to do it again she would...
I was there and there was no way the dog could have got out on it's own. Watching what happened has left me quite disturbed as I felt helpless. There was no way I could have done what this lady did. It was a foolhardy thing to do but I respect her bravery and the owner of the dog should be very grateful. Well done Helen
