A severe weather warning has been issued and will remain in place all Monday and through into Tuesday morning.
Motorists and pedestrians are being told to beware hazardous conditions across Greater Manchester and the north west.
The move comes after the region was covered by up to six inches of snow on Saturday in the first blizzards of 2012.
Snow-seekers wrapped up warm and took to the slopes to make the most of the February freeze.

Weather experts urged winter revellers to enjoy the snow while it lasts, with clearer conditions expected to sweep across the region this week.
Met Office chiefs warned that although further widespread snow was 'not expected' before the end of winter, plunging temperatures could see freezing fog and ice remain throughout the rest of this week.
Spokesman Dave Britton said: “We will see outbreaks of rain and warmer daytime temperatures across Greater Manchester which will clear the snow away, but those temperatures will drop into the night and create some very tricky driving conditions.
“The risk will move from snow to one of ice and freezing fog which we will have to contend with well into the week.
“What we have at the moment is a battle between cold air coming across from eastern Europe and warmer air arriving from the west.
“As the cold air pushes out into the week you will see clearer skies and warmer conditions during the daytime, which would be unlikely to bring further snowfall other than the possibility of light snow in higher grounds in the Pennines.”
Manchester Airport, which closed its runway for 90 minutes at 7pm on Saturday, has said it expects no further disruption to flights over the next 48 hours.
Paul Hadfield, spokesman for the airport, said: “Other than the 90-minute closure of the runway to clear it of snow, we haven't experienced any disruption and we are currently back on track.
“We are not anticipating any further problems over the next couple of days but as always our forecasters will be monitoring the situation as we go on into the week.
“As other European airports, including London Heathrow, have been experiencing problems we advise passengers to keep an eye on things check the status of their flights before arriving at the airport.”
Temperatures dipped to -7.5C in Woodford, Cheshire and -2C in Manchester city centre over the weekend as winter struck the region with a vengance.
Ambulance crews saw a surge in call-outs and firefighters also tackled a number of weather-related incidents.
Metrolink services on the Eccles and Bury lines were also disrupted and bus services in Bolton and Bury were suspended on Saturday as extreme weather worsened throughout Saturday.

There's no snpw here !
It's really coming down in Levy.
Trams have Stopped.....That was before the Snow !.
1mm of snow and trams broke
it's winter !! what do some people expect. a mini heat wave ?
Hardly heavy snow.
Metrolink appear to have come to a standstill but no surprise there.
Why does this country grind to a complete halt as soon as the white stuff appears? Its -26 in Russia and their trams don't have the same problems.
This country needs to get a grip - literally and get on with life when the weather gets like this.
I made the kids come with me so that i didn't look silly sledging on my own.WOO HOO!
A few flakes in Sale and rain. I cancelled a whole day out for this! That's why they spend so long telling you what the weather has been like today, because they haven't got a clue about tommorrow. I'll help them-It'll be cold and Carol Smiley will be..well...smiley.
C'mon Siberia! You can do better than a centimeter surely.
we love this in oldham town,BQ WEATHER............
WE love this weather here in oldham town, JUST LOVE IT............LET IT SNOWWWWWWWWWWWW
LET IT SNOW IN OLDHAM
Oh, how I miss the snow in Manchester; not really enjoying 70 degrees and bright sunshine!
We have had a little snow here in Colorado.. overnight.. No much just 27 inches...
If anything like Bury (useless) council then that's the whole country ground to halt for at least a week then!!
Metrolink have suspended the Bury line due to "adverse weather conditions". Not to worry, you can use your ticket on the 135 bus service. A great help if you live nowhere near ManchesterRoad/Bury Old Road.
Can't believe people are sending in pics and comments on 1/6" and 2" of snow !!! It happens this time every year....winter !!! Another couple of millimetres and Manchester will come to a stop !!!
around 10cm in rochdale area, snowed for 7 1/2 hrs it looks beautiful for the early morning mooch with the dog!
wish it would do this more, it's actully warmer when it snows than just being clear and frosty, the car thermo read -14c yesterday morning at 6:25am, a balmy -8c same time this morning.
Who's bothered about the Temp in Oxford ????....,Isn't this the MEN ?.
tram cancelled 135 stopped running so it cost me £11 by a very nice taxi driver who said it should have been more We knew this weather was coming so why were the gritters not out on the main bus routes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Countries all around the world a laughing at our 'hopeless' infrastructure...again. A light sprinkle of snow and the temperature dips a few degrees and everything grinds to a halt. The papers are reporting 'The Big Freeze'.......if its sunny for more than two weeks in the summer the is a drought and hose pipe bans in force one of the wettest countries in the world have no water...again, temperature just over 80f/27c degrees and we have 'The Big Heatwave' its normal summer and normal winter UK weather, why can we not cope with it, its NORMAL, travel a bit and see some proper weather! Its 4 Metres deep in Japan and they have clear roads ! and -32 in eastern Europe.
It's a good thing it has snowed in London... the news wouldn't have reported the snow otherwise.
I respectfully suggest that it's NOT the snow and fog 'causing chaos' in the region, but instead people's seeming inability to adapt their behaviour to suit the weather.
Weather is weather, it's always there, it's what people do when exposed to it that can and should change.
