Metrolink will offer two-for-one tickets every Tuesday in February as part of a month of discounts to entice people into Manchester.
Tram bosses have agreed to the deal on tickets into the city centre bought after 6pm using a special voucher.
It is part of a campaign called ‘Manchester Loves February’, launched by city centre chiefs yesterday.
Daily deals will be laid on for visitors throughout the month in order to boost footfall at a traditionally sluggish time of year.
Dozens of businesses, including top shops, restaurants and venues, will put on special offers.
They include the Bridgewater Hall and Royal Exchange, Malmaison and Radisson Edwardian hotels, Marks & Spencer and Harvey Nichols, as well as Matt and Phreds, Black Dog Ballroom and the independent 3MT theatre venue in the Northern Quarter.
Owners of the car park at 30 Tariff Street are offering £1-an-hour parking after 5pm, and £3 to park all night for the whole month.
The Metrolink deal is designed to bring more people in on what is typically the quietest night of the week.
Pat Karney, the council’s city centre chief, said: “We know everybody in Greater Manchester is very loyal to our city centre and this is a present from all the shops and businesses to say thank you for that.
“We want to make sure we are the number one value centre in the north west.”
David Allinson, director of the Manchester Arndale, where the campaign was launched, said: “People are becoming a lot more value conscious and its great to be able to promote these offers but the key thing with this is that it links in with transport too so they can actually access them.”
Deals, and details of how to claim them, will be posted at

with new offers added throughout the month.

So say your nearest stop is Eccles; a tram stops at 5.59 which you can't use because the ticket has to be bought after six pm. So you get the next one, it's delayed a little (not because Metrolink is rubbish or anything like that, it just happens occasionally) & it shows up at 6.20.
You get to town, it's 6.45, you go to M&S & try on a couple of items, Selfridges & try a couple more, Next & see a pair of shoes you love but there's a queue. Have a coffee in Starbucks & what do you know - the shops are shut.
Although the whole thing is irrelevant to you because you're single & this is a two for one offer.
Remind me who this is aimed at again?

Not sure two for one on the trams would be what convinced me to do it though.
