BBC Radio 5 Live off air as fire alarm sparks evacuation at MediaCity

BBC Radio 5 Live went off air for five minutes when a fire alarm sparked an evacuation at MediaCity.

The evacuation took place at 12.20am today during Tony Livesey's late-night show.

The Burnley-born presenter had been in the middle of a conversation about ageing rock-stars when he suddenly announced he and his team had to leave the studio.

He told his audience: “Listen, I've got to say goodbye to you because we got a fire alarm so we've got to get out but we'll get back to you as soon as possible. I think an emergency tape will come on.”

After two minutes of jingles and a re-run of an interview with Michael Palin by Richard Bacon, Livesey was able to come back on air and explain to bemused listeners that the building had been evacuated but everything was fine.

He said: “We're back, sorry. The protocol is once the red light comes on you've just got to get out so we ran out really. I left my slippers but everything's okay, there's no need to panic.”

Livesey's late-night chat show was the first to be broadcast from MediaCity after the BBC's move to Salford Quays last year

A fire can happen at anytime, HSE require random testing to ensure that any situation can be dealt with efficiently, nothing wrong here just because it was a live broadcast. I'm sure Radio 5 could learn something from this test too.

Well they say it was a fire alarm but in truth they were supposed to cut to a discussion on the day's live sport on BBC Television but as the BBC are no longer really interested in sport anymore, they had to come up with an excuse.

They haven't even got the rights to show the darts. I mean for goodness sake, just how skint has the Social Media City project made the Beeb?

Anything that keeps Livesey off the air !!! He is perhaps better on the radio, as a scruff on North West Tonight !

He was probably talking to himself anyway - was anyone listening?
