Peel Holdings submits plan for huge expansion of MediaCity

Plans have been submitted for a massive expansion of Media CityUK in Salford.

Proposals for the second phase of the development include acres of new offices, shops, a multi-storey car park and hotel. Residential developments and leisure facilities would also be included in the scheme.

The existing site is home to the BBC’s northern headquarters – with Granada also set to relocate from its city centre base.

But site owners Peel Holdings have proposed creating a further 5m square feet of offices, shops, and housing, bounded by Broadway and South Langworthy Road.

A consultation process will run until January 25 for people to have their say on the plans by developers Peel Media Ltd.

Details of the planning application at Salford council

Permission for the outline planning permission is due to be decided by March 22.

By this spring, 2,300 BBC staff will have relocated. Other businesses include ITV plus over 50 smaller media firms and a Media Enterprise Centre.

Around 1,500 Salford University students have also moved into a new Media City campus which includes TV and radio studios, digital media and post-production labs.

Good news.
But if you're going to rent/sell buildings to another public service broadcaster, could you make sure they've got enough money to serve those members of the public that like sport?

Because no-one did when the BBC rolled into town.

Great for the area but the space is currently very soulless.
Peel are opting to encourage chain shops and restaurants rather than independents.
This is already creating a clone town feel to the place.
Such a home to creative industry should be creative in every aspect of its existence and that includes shopping, food, entertainment and artwork.
At the moment this is not happening.
Its all top down development and unless people are given the opportunity to put their own stamp on the area it will ultimately remain a lifeless community.

If it diverts Peel's attention away from local greenbelt then its a good thing.

But i would dearly love to be a fly on the wall when the movers and shakers of our local council and our local landowner meet up.

It's surely a carve up in these parts?

They're kindred spirits after all - a pair of environmental carpetbaggers !

I went to the Lowery outlet the other week and as someone said below the area is soul less and very poorly designed. I hope they put a bit more effort in this time and create something people would actually want to visit, Manchester/ Salford is a great city don't waste the space PEEL.
