Prisoners at Strangeways racked up a food bill of almost £1m last year.
The food bill – which stood at £997,616 in 2010 – was an increase of almost 30 per cent since 2000.
Earlier this year, the MEN revealed how inmates were treated to meals of Jamaican chicken, lamb passanda and cod provencal – costing 66p per meal.
But HMP Manchester has one of the lowest food costs per prisoner, costing less than £2 per day to feed inmates.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: "The average cost of prison food is £2.20 per prisoner per day.
"The National Offender Management Service has national food contracts in place which means uniform prices are paid for food in prisons throughout England and Wales.
"The prison service has set minimum requirements in relation to meals which includes advice from the Food Standards Agency."

It certainly looks like a very nice place, and the menu sounds good.
"But HMP Manchester has one of the lowest food costs per prisoner, costing less than £2 per day to feed inmates."
Another non story then.
Why are the prisoners being fed Jamaican chicken ?
Some law-abiding citizens are struggling to find the money to feed themselves and their children.
looks like a posh hotel, i bet they have tv, pool tables and a bar!!
Wonder what's for pudding! Yum yum!
Can I pop round for Xmas dinner!
Perhaps HM Prison service could give catering lessons to the legions of chavs and dolehoppers out there who insist that they are officially poor and cannot possibly exist on their meagre benefits...? 2 quid a day sounds good to me for a nutritionally balanced breakfast/lunch/dinner....do they take bookings?
Usual non story designed to stir up the Daily Fail readers. £2 a day food (for 3 squares) is certainly a fantastically good price, and should be commended.
Let's remember that prisoners, regardless of their crime, have the same right to food as everyone else. Just to remind people that prisoners also cook and prepare the food, so it's not served on a silver platter.
toast for breakfast, baked potato for lunch and sandwich for evening meal cost £ 1.20 tops, why waste money on vermin, lifers should be made to have just water 2 days a week, make them realise the seriousness of their crimes.I could save the prison service millions, turn off lights earlier, turn down heating, recycle everything possible, This is why prisoners are being released grossly fat and overweight.Nobody has a right to food, in the real world one works to get money to buy food, these low life rats contribute zero to society
Non story, especially as the costs are pretty low.
People should remember; the punishment prisoners are subject to for their crimes is incarceration and loss of liberty for a period of time. They were not sentenced to being beaten on a daily basis and fed pig swill, as some on here seem to suggest.
In the end, if you want people to come out of prison as human beings and not animals, they should be treated as such. Not everyone in prison is a violent offender or sexual deviant. They are people who are in there as punishment for what they did and that should be their only punishment, as dictated by the judge in sentencing.
And no; I am not posting this as someone who has been in prison. I just think there's more to crime prevention than "lock them up and throw away the key".
Whatever happened to good ole bread & water?
I'd let the buggers starve!
Wonder where they go shopping?
All prisons should be Open ....... open to the elements !
