The relatives of Moors Murder victims could come face-to-face with Ian Brady for the first time after a judge ruled the killer's mental-health tribunal should be held in public.
Brady, who with his partner Myra Hindley was responsible for the murders of five children in the 1960s, wants to be transferred from a secure hospital to a Scottish prison where, he has previously claimed, he hopes to be allowed to die.
Judge Robert Atherton has granted permission for the tribunal hearing to be held in public – meaning Brady could be seen for the first time in decades.
Brady was given life for the murders of John Kilbride, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans at Chester Assizes in 1966.
And in 1987 Brady and Hindley finally admitted killing Keith Bennett and Pauline Reade.
Both were taken back to Saddleworth Moor in 1987 to help police find the remains of the missing victims but only Pauline's body was found.
Keith's body has never been recovered from the moors. His mother Winnie has made repeated calls for Brady to reveal the location of his grave.
Winnie, 78, of Longsight, who is still having treatment for cancer said: "I would like to go to the hearing. I hope he says something about Keith because I'll be there and I'll be watching."
"As long as I get to know where Keith is, I couldn't care what happens to Brady. I just hope that before he dies, he will tell me where Keith is buried. It's been more than 40 years now, it's been a long time. It just clings to me all the time. It's always at the back of my mind.
"Brady should be in a prison and not in a hospital. I hope and pray that Keith will one day be found. Only Brady can tell us. I'm 78 now and I don't know how long I'm going to be here."
Brady and Hindley lured children and teenagers to their deaths, before burying them on Saddleworth Moor.
Keith Bennett, 12, was snatched on June 16, 1964, after he left home to visit his grandmother.
Pauline Reade, 16, disappeared on her way to a disco on July 12, 1963, and John Kilbride disappeared the following November.
Lesley Ann Downey, 10, was lured away from a funfair on Boxing Day 1964, and Edward Evans, 17, was killed in October 1965.
Hindley was convicted of killing Lesley Ann and Edward and shielding Brady after John's murder, and jailed for life.
Terry Kilbride, 57, whose brother John, 12, disappeared in November 1963, said: "This hearing should be done behind closed doors and the public should be told about it afterwards. I think he will start to upset people again and I don't think people want to hear it.
"But if it is going to be done in public, I would like to go. I would go if I could get there, I definitely would. It would be hard, but it would have to be done."
Terry, from Ashton, whose other brother Danny died two months ago after a lifelong crusade to keep Brady and Hindley behind bars, said: "Danny would have wanted to be there and it's come down to me now. I would go in his place."
Hindley died in jail in November 2002, aged 60. Brady has spent the last 25 years at the high-security Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside.
Mr Kilbride added: "My feeling is that Brady should never have been where he is. I think he should have been in prison all along, not in a hospital.
"I don't think he's mentally ill. I just think he's a completely evil person. He shouldn't still be living. I've lost my mother and father and two brothers and they're keeping him alive in there.
"But we need to make sure he's alive because he's the only one that can really help Winnie Johnson by telling her where Keith is buried. I know what she's going through and its a shame."

Brady must never be released. People that mad/bad never lose it. Hopefully, he will live a long and unhealthy life for many years incarcerated. He was/is a filthy degenerate incapable of normal association with other human beings.
I look forward to reading the right on pap that I feel certain some liberal do-gooder will post.
Brady, who was born in Glasgow, wants to be transferred to a Scottish prison and be allowed to die
Well die then no ones stoppping you!
If he wants to be "allowed to die" then we should grant his wish, it has cost us taxpayers a fortune to keep his monster locked up all these years, he should have hanged in 1966!
I disagree, he's served his time, everyone deserves a second chance in life.
How much is this tribunal costing the taxpayer? At times like these should we be spending money on the likes of Brady? He should have hung.
This article was far too long to actually read, but I saw a picture of ian brady so this must be something to do with the liberal elite euro elf n safety do gooders
I believe that we should have a vote on the death penalty for people who deserve it.
All those in favour should expect to share the cost of the rope, whilst those against shoud pay for the prisoners upkeep and the cost of any hearings.
Should a mistake be proved beyond all doubt, then we should admit to it and pay a good amount to their estate.
I have a good idea, release him and then take bets on how long it will take for this scumbag to be smashed into pieces, i would have to stick a £10 on under 24 hours
I read Brady's book, he makes a convincing case for society being sick depraved evil and hypocritical.
Which of course he would know a lot about.
A lot of people would be quite happy for the state to murder innocent people just to satisy their blood lust. In my eyes that makes them criminals.
Couldn't it be held at Old Trafford or the Etihad on a match day? Perhaps the derby would be a suitable occasion.
The fans could come together as one to deliver their findings.
He must be thin by now as he's been on a hunger strike for about 20 years.
He has a strong desire to join Mrya Hindley and Lord longford, what a weirdo.
Why waste public money? Surely they cannot be contemplating a possible release date or are they? have his human rights been infringed? Keep him where he is, at least the public know where he is or do they?
I've made a TV documentary on the moors murders and have spoken to over 100 people surrounding the Moors Murder case from Police Officers, lawyers, supporters, prison 'visitors' and victims families. I've also read letters from Ian Brady. Those who believe he should be given a second chance must be deliberately being
provocative or are ill informed. Brady is a
psychopath, they can never be rehabilitated
or 'cured''. Whether or not Brady now poses a risk to society is immaterial- the man sadistically killed children for his own sexual gratification and has continued to play
games with Winnie Johnson and the police over all these years in order to concealthe whereabouts of the body. Whilst Poor Keiths body remains unfound Brady might
have a bargaining tool... Brady describes the action of murder as nothing more than an existential exercise which by committing it elevated himself above other people. Brady has always accepted his fate and never mounted a freedom campaign based on lies like Myra did. He should never be released but neither does he want that. But should we send a psychopath back to 'normal' prison so he can exercise his right to die? No we shouldn't. Hes a child killer and I hope the public hearing shines a light on his true state of mind: that of a rambling madman and keeps him in in Ashworth.
I'm not sure many of you know the score! He doesn't want to be free,he's too much of a wuss for that. He'd be murdered within hours if he was ever freed. He wants to go to prison because it'll be easier to top himself that way.He wants to take the easy way out. Shame his victims didn't get that choice.I just hope that the pathetic, attention seeking creature tells Winnie where her son is buried before he does kill himself.
I dont really have any feelings towards Brady simply because it happened before my parents were born. Over the past few months I have become very interested in his crimes though, but I dont care what happens to him, I just know that if hes inside, were all safe... I just hope Winnie finds out where Keith is before she passes away so she can give him the send off he deserves
Brady and Hindley should have been executed, along with every other child murderer/abuser since.
I say let him come out of the hospital and go to a prison in Scotland - they will release him soon enough and they maybe a just member of the public will finally give him the true justice he deserves (and i for one would think they are doing the public a service that the government has been to limp to do). Every breath he takes is an affront to those little kiddies that he and that twisted freak took the lives of. Nobody who did those things deserves a second chance, if your brain is programmed in as sick and twisted fashion as his is to do those vile things to babies then you can't be changed no matter how good the rehabilatation.
