Climate change report by Manchester expert will be key part of United Nations negotiations

Prof David Lee with colleague Dr Jenny Crowley

A Manchester pollution expert’s report on climate change is to form the basis for global talks on the environment.

David Lee, a professor at Manchester Metropolitan University, is the author of a crucial section of a United Nations report being unveiled today.

Prof Lee, a world-recognised expert in aviation emissions, was asked to help show the UN whether global temperature rises could be curbed – and if so, how.

His chapter in the new report – called Bridging the Emissions Gap – was being unveiled today at the Royal Society in London. The document will be used as the blueprint for global negotiations in South African next week.

Prof Lee – who heads the university’s centre for aviation, transport, and environment – is one of three British experts who have helped write the study.

Aviation and shipping emissions are currently not covered by international rules on global warming.

The European Union is introducing new legislation which will force airlines to budget for their carbon emissions – but America, and other countries, are fighting similar restrictions.

Prof Lee has studied emissions from air and shipping routes across the globe and predicted the levels of waste that will be churned out in 2020 and 2050. The findings of the report will be presented to world leaders at the UN Climate Change conference in Durban on Monday.

The world’s governments are trying to find a way of limiting a global temperature rise to just 2C.

The UN has gathered the world’s top scientists to study the gap between commitments by countries to reduce their gas emissions and the reduction needed to restrain the temperature rise.

Prof Lee, who is also an official advisor to the Department for Transport, has previously carried out research at Manchester airport and was a major contributor to last year’s UN talks in Cancun.

It's a pity the MEN doesn't share what his thoughts are. Is it that there is something not quite compatible with Manchester council pushing the Airport and its culture of weekend-breaks-because-you-need-it-as-one-of-your-5-a-year and at the same time trying to be cool on climate change and having working parties and green agendas?

"The findings of the report will be presented to world leaders at the UN Climate Change conference in Durban on Monday....The UN has gathered the world’s top scientists..."

So how are these world leaders and experts going to get to Durban? Surely not by flying? Why do they all needs to go there? Hypocrisy flourishes.

Who could believe the climate change scientists after their debacle at southern Universities of dcotoring results. Speak to the largest global contributors to pollution, USA, China, and India.

Any "scientist" aligning themselves with the now debunked AGW theory are really risking their reputations. The Climategate 2 emails are shedding mor light on the murky world of climate alarmism.
