Police say they are 'proud' of the exemplary behaviour of Manchester City fans despite defeat in Italy last night.
About 800 Blues travelled to Italy to watch City lose to Napoli in the Champions League.
Club officials had written to the supporters ahead of the game asking them to avoid no-go areas and hide their club colours.
The action was taken after Bayern Munich fans were stabbed outside the Stadio San Paolo last month.
But local officials have told cops from Greater Manchester Police, who were in Italy to help security for the game, there were no significant incidents or arrests.
Chief Inspector Chris Hill told the M.E.N: “I was really proud of the fans. They did themselves proud and they made Manchester and football proud as far as I'm concerned.
“All the fans did exactly what police said and they've all gone home safely. There have been checks with all the hospitals and the local police and there have been no incidents at all.”
Before the game, Italian police had said a City supporter was attacked in Sorrento some 30 miles south of Naples, requiring 12 stitches in hospital for a head wound.
However, the bemused supporter later told GMP officers he had not been attacked, insisting he had been drunk and fallen over.
After being treated in hospital, he attended the match.
A source said: “The local police said there had been an altercation between City fans. Nothing of the sort happened. He just got drunk and fell over, and that's how he got injured.
"He had huge stitches on his forehead. But he still went to the game in good spirits. There was a doctor in his party and they were joking he would have to look after him.”

Well done to all our fans! Great advert to our beloved Club!
we are impeccable
What about the idiot who smuggled the fireworks into the ground?
Thought the way that City fans were treated by the Police was appalling,. especially the ninety minute Magical Mystery Tour before the game,, but overall the Napoli fans were fairly friendly.
We were never goig to be the problem!
If an English team had a record these fans have we'd be out on our ear p.d.q.!
Gald everyone got back, here's to Sunday.
Now that makes Great news reading ! Well done to all the fans.
Shame the team didn't
Laughable when the poilce are "proud" of supporters for behaving - for crying out loud they're adults, they should behave themselves!! What a pathetic world we live in.
I meet a few fans who were threatened with knifes, some punched and at least one who got stabbed on the backside, but it was never reported to the police.
I also spoke to fans who were drinking with Napoli fans and had a great time, so it shows the contrast.
The police were very well organised though and I think the warnings to supporters set the right tone. Everyone was on their guard, and rightly so, it's just not a safe place to visit frankly.
Not a place I'll go back to visit soon anyway
well done to all the fans that made the trip, you have done the club and our City proud!
This is absolute nonsense from the police, having friends who were with a large group of city fans who stayed in sorrento, the man in qeustion was actually attacked with an iron bar, needing to be takin by ambulance to hospital, city supporters were "jumped" when a small group left the pub, this resulting in a mass brawl in the street. , the were then baton charged by the italian police, ... Another cover up by the Italian authorities . Disgraceful scenes.
......................shame the team didn't.
'Good behaviour' from a group of adults makes headlines.. Stop the planet, I want to get off.
The Italian Police & their back up teams were exemplary too, even though some of the muppets on the Thomas Cook buses seemed to think otherwise just prior to us re-boarding the coaches to go to the game. If you act with common sense and respect, and don't drink to excess, you find all foreign constabularies and fair and even handed, if you get bladdered and are even slightly aggressive, they will respond in kind.
Apart from the fact that the over hyped reaction left us fairly much penned into the port area, the trip was good. My lad and I ventured around the bay to the University side of the port and found it to be calm, beautiful and with excellent, if not particularly cheap, food.
Again, well done to Thomas Cook & the City staff for a well arranged trip.
Nice to see it was incident free !!!!
I stopped in Sorrento with a mate and his lad and I witnessed a brawl in the street with bothh sets of fans giving as good has they got. Dont know the circumstances but it was the city fans getting baton charged. Altogether no more than a group of 15.
Point being tho to say it went of without incident is not accurate but to say no-one got stabbed is not meaning it was a good night.
think the only thing that spoilt that day was the team didn't wont to win, school yard goals that every teams knows about the pass back in the box, city have done it loads of times to great effect and we can't even see our own tricks coming?? ball watching is what it has to be and they are very close to losing the chance of a really good trophie in UEFA league. what a waste of effort to get this far and blow it because they cant be bothered,,
Just goes to show that if you behave like human beings you get treated like them by the local population & the bobbies.
Perhaps thats why the rags always have such a hard time abroad ?
All 20 of them?
come on liverpool bwahahahahaha its all falling apart lol
Am I missing something here? If I go somewhere abroad (which is fairly frequently) or go about the processes of my daily life I really wouldn't expect to receive praise for not acting like a yob. Because I wouldn't.
What is it with football people?
Wasn't the issue always going to be the behaviour of Napoli's fans and the Italian police? How was their behaviour?
Anyone else find it incredible that grown men should be praised by police (!) for NOT misbehaving at a..... football match; especially one in someone else's country? Maybe Santa will bring them a present too?
It wasn't incident free though was it? Just a hush hush by the police there. I know for a fact at least one person was stabbed, unbelievable lies once again
might have been a different story if napoli had lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
