Video: Medical student, 26, died when he was hit by lorry while cycling to work at Wythenshawe Hospital

A medical student has died after colliding with a lorry on his way to work.

The 26-year-old, who has not yet been named, was on his way to Wythenshawe Hospital when the accident happened at around 9.30am.

It is understood he was a third-year student at the medical school at Manchester University.

He was cycling with another medical student – who escaped uninjured - at the time of the incident.

Floral tributes were left tied to nearby railings after the incident, which happened just after the morning rush-hour.

Friends and colleagues at the hospital were said to be 'shocked' at the news, with special counselling sessions set up for those who needed it.

The young man's family have been informed and formal identification was expected to take place tomorrow morning.

The accident happened at the junction of Southmoor Road and Hollyhedge Road near to the hospital.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene after the cyclist become trapped underneath the wagon - but tragically he died at the scene.

Sections of Southmoor Road, Hollyhedge Road, Greenbrow Road and Ledson Road were closed off for most of the day while police accident investigators examined the scene.

A 45-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention.

He was taken into police custody for questioning and has now been released on bail.

Sgt Adam Greenslade, from Wythenshawe Road Policing Unit, said: “A young man has tragically died and we are appealing for anyone who saw this incident to call us so we can establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

“Please get in touch if you have any information that may assist with our investigation.”

Anyone with information can call police on 0161 856 6108 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

It just isn't safe for bicycles on todays roads. More needs to be done to allow cyclists to get around safely.

as someone who cycles in that area every week day it is particularly sobering - i can only sympathise with the young mans family over this tragic loss - it only highlights the importance to everyone using the roads that we must all take the utmost care at all times whether driving , cycling or walking .

A terrible loss of a young life with everything to live for. The loss of a young life is always a truly sad thing for a family to bear, and I hope God comforts them in their time of need.

Obviously full details are not out yet, but the fact that the driver has been arrested points to yet more wreckless driving on our roads. I'm sick of the sight of drivers either on mobile phones, applying makeup or combing hair, eating, drinking from coffee cups, and yes, smoking while driving. When will these people learn?

How sad and tragic this is, a young gifted life lost in such circumstances but let us all not make judgements on why we think it occured, let the police carry out their investigations and I'm sure they will find out the real facts.
In the meantime my condolences go out to this poor young man's family, friends, and work colleagues. R.I.P.

A high majority of comments seem to put the blame on the driver by assuming what has happened. Being arrested is standard procedure in these type of incidents. Maybe the cyclist was as at fault. It's a devastating outcome for both parties and a tragic ACCIDENT. Very sad news though.

When will MCC learn that we NEED segregated, decent-built, safer bicycle paths, away from motor traffic? Plenty of space in Wythenshawe, so no excuses for not providing them! I hope the lorry wasn't to do with the tram line construction?

im a regular cyclist and seen a huge dip in driving standards, drivers have to understand we have the right to cycle and that the helmet wont always save us from death, they have to understand about the state of our roads, trafford now has the worst road conditions of any area i have been in, they also have to understand about weather conditions about windy conditions and what it will do to the performance of a cyclist, in the end we need to be taken away from the busy roads and that will take funding and unless the lottery does put something back into good causes more cyclists will die, rip to the guy that died
