The thought police: Sneak preview of GMP's new headquarters

The new £64m HQ in Newton Heath

Officers at GMP’s new police HQ will be inspired by quotes from John Lennon, Einstein, Martin Luther King, and the man behind McDonald’s.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy and his senior command team wanted the walls to inspire their staff and so together they drew up a list of motivational figures from around the world, together with their most up-lifting quotes.

The M.E.N. was given a sneak preview of the £64m building which is nearing completion at Central Park in Newton Heath.

One quote from John Lennon states: "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality."

Nearby a quote from Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney says: "You always pass failure on the way to success." On the same floor a huge mural features Martin Luther King beside the quote: "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Orison Swett Marden, the late American author of motivational books, is quoted on another wall: "The golden rule for every businessman is this: put yourself in the customers’ place."

Another American author, Kenneth Blanchard, whose books on leadership have sold millions around the world, says in another quote: "The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority."

Yet another American author, science fiction write Ursula Le Guin, says this on another wall: "It’s good to have an end to journey towards; but it’s the journey that matters in the end."

Elsewhere Albert Einstein is quoted: "A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new."

Double Noble-prize winning scientist Marie Curie virtually has an entire wall to herself on the fifth floor, featuring a picture and these words: "We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained."

Ray Kroc, the American who made McDonald’s into a world-wide fast-food giant, has also been reserved some space, saying: "If you love what you are doing and always put the customer first, success will be yours."

Tell me it is the First of April. Quotations from pop-singers and hollywood film stars but none from the Bible. The waste of money on all these clichés shows what is wrong with the Greater Manchester police. Why not these quotations: "The good should not walk in fear of the evil; justice is colour blind; crime will not pay; there are no bad soldiers only bad officers; fear the judgement day."

Its a case of the public sector wasting our money on things that serve no purpose, even at this time of severe cutbacks.

Never heard of a Double Noble-Prize... What's one of them and what did Marie Curie do to deserve it?

I can inspire the staff:
Smarten up
Rememebr the public pay your wages
Arrest criminals
and stop being so arrogant!

Mmmm..if it has been costed as part the decorative aspects of the building then it could be argued as part of the fixtures and fittings of a new build site.

Ergonomics are important aspect of building design and costs can be justified as it is a communal area.... perhaps they could have borrowed art work from that held in storage at municipal art galleries of government art repositories set aside for the purpose.

As a one off start up cost it is not overtly expensive...

Who ever authorised this outrageous expense should be made to pay for it.
