Video: Manchester City fans slam stewards over row with ‘heart problem’ man

The video shows the man collapsed on the floor asfter a confrontation with stewards

Fans have criticised City stewards after internet footage emerged of a 60-year-old supporter collapsing following a confrontation.

Furious Blues supporters hit out at security firm Showsec and police after the man, who said he had a heart condition, ended up on the floor amid ugly scenes at the Etihad Stadium during Saturday’s clash with Aston Villa.

A City spokesman said the fan had been ‘refused to co-operate' and stewards had responded to complaints from other supporters.

Police confirmed they had received a complaint about the incident, which was captured by fans on mobile phones.

Chief Supt Gerry Donnellan said the fan was arrested for a suspected breach of the peace, but then de-arrested. He added that the Professional Standards Branch will decide whether to investigate. It is understood stewards were trying to eject the man for persistent standing.

One clip, on YouTube, shows him sitting while stewards attempt to remove him and police look on. At one point he asks ‘why are you screaming at me?’ and then tells police and security staff he takes five tablets a day for a heart condition.

To shouts of ‘leave him alone’ from supporters in Block 109, he is seen being lifted up as stewards jostle with fans. The video then cuts to the man lying on the floor before paramedics arrive.

See the video below - the audio from the clip has been removed because of the large amount of swearing ...

Steven Brown, 26, from Bury, was four rows behind the fan.

He said: "He was stood up like every other person in that section. I heard everything and he never swore at them. Before the police came he sat down. One of the stewards climbed over three rows to grab him. He was confrontational and that started getting people’s backs up.

"The man started holding his chest and collapsed to floor. That’s when police radioed for paramedics to come and help him. After that they took him out onto the concourse and sent him on his way. It wasn’t needed. There were 2,500 standing up and they picked him out."

A City spokesman said: "A supporter who was persistently standing was politely asked to sit down by stewards, following complaints from supporters. After refusing to co-operate with the stewards, the police intervened to help eject the man.

"The man refused to leave, prompting a small number of surrounding supporters to become aggressive to both the stewards and the police. The man in question was evicted and a further two men were arrested for assault."

Nobody from Showsec was available for comment.

Showsec are bullies in jackets, it's only a matter of time before it kicks off with this bunch of thugs.

The club are telling fibs.

Manchester City should get to grips with the stewards and the company responsible for them. If they insist on fans being seated for the whole of the match then I suggest they start by enforcing the ruling with the away fans, instead of picking on a random City fan just to make an example.

The Showsec thugs have no right to grab hold of anybody in an aggressive manner if a fan is truly acting illegally then it is the Police who have to get involved.

Showsec are never available for comment even if you work for them.
There training is non-existence and how and why do Manchester City FC and Manchester City Council use them is baffling.
On many occasions they say they have so many SIA Officers looking after bars and public events but they do not have that many and use stewards all the time but still charge these guys the full SIA rate.
Saturday incidents so to show that they do not know what they are doing, after GMP was called in, the stewards should of retreated and allowed the police to deal with it, instead you see one steward getting in there and causing the whole incident to be blown out of proportion.
Near the end of the video, you saw the supervisor, no where near the incident where he should of been moving his staff out of the way, away from the fans especially after two of them were punched.
Showsec, you not liked at Manchester City, it is about time you listen to the people of Manchester and not only at the football,

No mention about GMP poors standards on handling the matter in what happened in 109 if you look at the other Videos on YouTube¤ there handling is disgracefull and some of there of officers are a disgrace don't just blame the fans.

"the audio from the clip has been removed because of the large amount of swearing "

The MEN obviously believes that its readership is either too young or has come from the National viewers & listeners organisation. Some of us have heard swearing before, and would appreciate being given the opportunity to make up our own minds with a full picture uncensored by the nanny paper!

Let's not forget the whole reason why this has become such a huge problem. Standing at football matches is illegal (as per the Taylor Report), and the clubs are only trying to enforce the law, otherwise local councils have the power to close down parts of the ground. It's a battle that's been raging for years and years.

Football fans want to stand, football clubs don't need the hassle of trying to enforce seating, and in modern stadiums, small, monitored and safe standing areas are a safe possibility.

However, once anyone tries to raise a campaign about standing areas in football grounds, the whole Hillsbrough issue is raised and it's quashed. Football stadiums nowadays have the safety procedures in place to have standing areas of limited capacity for fans who wish it. Why can't we seriously introduce these areas. We're not talking vast terraces, but small pockets of areas where fans who want to stand, can do so without being threatened with ejection.

OH, football lunatic supporters at it again, the attitude we can do what we want, i stopped going to football matches 35 years ago, but correct me if i am wrong, you are supposed to remain seated are"nt you while watching the match, so if you can"t out you go, go and watch rugby if you want to be with civilised supporters, why they even let you have a beer while you watch the game. proper fans, proper players, PROPER ALL ROUND.

Everyone knows that you stand up in 109, that's why you buy your ticket there. A load of jobsworths..

Picking on and old man for standing up when everyone around him was, now these Showsec stewards have been exposed for what thaey are, bullies, the police were a disgrace too.

Away fans 'are allowed' to stand for the full 90 minutes because it is to hard to police, because they don't know the names and addresses who are sat where.

When you're an home fan, all your details are known if you are sat in your seat. So therefore if you stand up they can confiscate your season card. (So why not send letters to these people warning them beforehand or afterwards warning them anymore of it and your card will be confiscated)?
On this case, This whole section is the 'singing section' which means people are going to be on their feet singing. If the person in front of you stands up and starts singing, that means the person behind is going to automatically stand up so he can watch the game.
But the security at Eastlands already know this, but they choose to send the little men in to tell people to sit down. If there is a couple of thousand standing, which happened on saturday, then there is not much you can do about it, but, you can't single one man out from the rest and think that will solve the problem. As you can see it made matters worse.
There is no problems with persistent standing with home fans at the game, I know cos I'm there every game. The only place where there is people standing is in the singing section which is understandable (why create a singing section if you cant stand). Its not as if people sit down and sing is it?

As for the statement from the City spokesman, it suggests this man in the video was in the wrong. He was one of many and he was singled out. The abuse was only given out by many people once these stewards started to manhandle the bloke.

So for anyone at City reading this. Why create a singing section when you're not going to let people stand up and sing?
You either do it properly or don't do it at all.

One thing for sure is, this bloke wont be going back to Eastlands to watch another game, after watching City for over 50 years.

Why was this supporter the only one that was politely asked to sit down ? There are 2,000 plus fans that persistantly stand in this area of the ground, plus the away supporters in an adjacent stand. Surely if the man were to comply with the request he would not be able to see the game, as the people in front would still be standing. The law on standing at grounds is a nonsense and unenforcable. The fans are paying customers and should be listened to. If they want to stand then the law should be changed and the stands reconstructed to allow this to be done safely. The law was brought in as a result of poor stewarding / policing in the first place (Hillsborough). Those same police / stewards are now expected to enforce this ridiculous law. The world continues to get madder by the day !

I saw the whole incident.
The bizzies were going off what the stewards were telling them.
i noticed only a couple of people stood up to the police when they arrived because they knew that this guy was in the wrong.
there were a lot children around when the swearing was going on and i for one applaud the behaviour of the police and the stewards

PROBLEM IS ;- police & stewards turn a blind eye to standing in other parts of the stadium (this happens at most grounds including anfield ironically) and so obviously other people ask the question if they can stand why can we not ? safe standing needs to be brought back - it works fine in germany and several other places and it would work here . unfortunately spineless politicians will never allow it ? i was sat opposite the east stand on saturday and it was frightening - it was a miracle that a full scale riot did not happen . some of the stewards(not all by a long way - but a big percentage ) are clueless and peter fletcher has a lot to answer for !

The ShowSec stewards were trying to get people to sit and picked on this bloke who refused to be bullied. He wasn't even in the front row so there were people standing in fornt of him. As a result, they manhandled him (which is against the law) and other fans tried to protect him. I seriously doubt that anyone complained about him.

Report This Reply

he was singled out because he was an easy target. a man in his 60s is far easier to muscle around than a burly guy in his 20s.

Showsec are disgraceful buliies. Shame on you City. Well done to the fans who stood up for themsleves and for the fan in question. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

This matter is nothing to do with safe standing, MCFC, the Taylor report etc, we all know about it.

It is a case off bullying an old man and picking on the weakest target when everyone else around him was standing.

Considering the club condone 'The Poznan' which involves both standing & jumping up & down, how can they condemn standing ? Stewards across the country act in a similar manner,it must be part of the job description, good luck to the old guy btw.

Report This Reply

just a thought. but when the final whistle goes around forty odd thousand people all stand up and shuffle off quite safely. when a goal is scored thousands of people stand up, turn their backs on the pitch and jump up and down, again quite safely. so what is the problem with standing up at any other time?

also if the (bar) stewards want to get somebody to sit down please start at the front!!

sort it out city ...bang out of order

Funny how the clip doesn't show the 15 minutes that this so called "victim" refused to sit down, whilst being asked politely to do so, or a steward being punched in the face by a fan for doing his job, guess that is to be expected from one sided journalism

If this non standing policy is being enforced at the football, then why is it not enforced at the music concerts held at the Etihad Stadium, of which i'm sure Showsec "police".
