BBC celebrity Nicky Campbell had the last laugh over critics of the corporation’s move to Salford.
The presenter of Five Live Breakfast, which moves into new studios at MediaCity later this month, posted a picture of a Michaelangelo-style ceiling on the social networking site Twitter. He added the caption: "Our new Salford studio. Check out the brilliant mural."
After a number of people complained about the BBC wasting money on lavish new studios, Campbell had to reassure the followers of his Twitter page that he was ‘visiting Chatsworth House with Mrs C’ and that he was only joking.
The presenter then cheekily followed up by posting a picture of an ornate drawing room in the Derbyshire stately home – home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire – calling it ‘The boss's office.’
The BBC last week announced that an extra 1,000 staff would be moving to MediaCity – on top of the 2,300 who are already in the process of moving by next spring.
Campbell, who has been a vocal supporter of the BBC’s move north, said his light-hearted tweet had caused outrage and that he had ‘feebly’ had to retract it.

For goodnesss sake - some people need to get a sense of humour
Doesn't Nicky Campbell know you are not allowed a sense of humour on the BBC?
Welcome to Ma...................Salford.
All Mr Campbell has done is draw out and expose the kind of narrow-minded muppets, who immediately latch onto the smallest percieved item in order to denegrade this major project. Kudos!
BBC Celebrity?? I think not!
Good lad. Suzzanna Reid...all I can say about the move.
Carry on Mr Campbell never lose your sense of humour ,it is blatently obvious your bosses have lost theirs.Remember the old saying your a long time dead !
Last week he was asking people 'What do you like about the BBC?' - later on, he broadcast 'and John from Bristol (or where-ever) has texted in "Nothing!". That's John's 2,781st text to the BBC, by the way." Made me laugh.
Rubbish country full of morons see also our treatment of the elderly
The BBC really is just another arm of the Civil Service (ie a pedantic and humour-free environment) where again - just like the Civil Service, silly little things are taken out of context, creating a disproportionate amount of panic! How an earth can something like this be so contentious?
citycentre - you are correct!
Unfortunately my judgement was clouded by a previous similar incident where someone from the BBC overreacted to a harmless prank and unfortunately I couldn't erase that from my mind! - having said that it's interesting to see what people are saying on here about the beeb.
campbell is one of the very few decent tv/ radio presenters we have left - this story only highlights the average iq of most tweeters !
Nicky Campbell...Scot's born who has had to live/work in London to ply his trade. Now he can live and work again in the Great North.
The southern softies who have had to leave the home counties, have thrown their dummy's away and had a sense of humour bypass.
Now...who else has the guts to move to "ferret country"?
Oh dear, Unreasonably Censored in trendy Chorlton - those with 'sparkling intelligence' at least know where to place an apostrophe, and it's NOT where you put it!
salford will always be salford, you can build new buildings but what can you do about the chavs?
Why would anybody take anything this guy says seriously. He is a total idiot, incessantly reminding everyone that he is adopted and how wonderful his childhood was. His parents must be saints to have put up with him, I'd have taken him back after a week. He constantly interjects into conversations little titbits of knowledge at the most tenuous relevance, just to demonstrate how clever he (thinks) he is.
