A young woman was raped on a residential street in Sale.
The victim was attacked at about 5.30pm on Sunday.
She was grabbed from behind as she made her way through a short cut across a small grass area off Newbury Avenue at the rear of Sale West Community Centre.
Her attacker, thought to be wearing black gloves, threatened her with an unidentified weapon before raping and assaulting her, say police.
She suffered facial and other injuries during her ordeal while her attacker also stole a small amount of cash from her before fleeing.
Det Con Aiden Kennedy said: “This was a nasty attack on a lone woman during the day.”
He warned woman to avoid short-cuts even in daylight.
The victim has described her attacker as a white man aged in his early 20s, with brown eyes and bushy eyebrows.
He was wearing a dark coloured zipped top and tracksuit bottom with white stripes.
The victim, who is being comforted by specially trained officers, has given police brief details of the crime although she had not yet been formally video-interviewed.
Appealing for witnesses, DC Kennedy, of the Serious Sexual Offences Unit in the Trafford police division, said: “I'd like to reassure people we're doing all we can to find who is responsible, but we need the public's help, so if anyone has any information, they must call us.
“I'd also like to point out that it is advisable for women to take precautions for their own safety, such as remaining aware of your surroundings - even during daylight hours - and to avoid taking shortcuts."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the unit on 0161 856 7573 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
