A dad arrested after an intruder was stabbed to death at his home has thanked thousands of supporters who have backed him.

More than 6,000 people have joined Facebook campaigns supporting Bramhall businessman Vincent Cooke.

The 39-year-old father-of-one was arrested on suspicion of murdering a suspected burglar at his detached house on
Midland Road in Bramhall last month.

He was released on bail pending further police inquiries into the incident, which left career criminal Raymond Jacob, 37, dead.

Mr Cooke has told detectives he was acting in self defence to protect his wife Karen and 12-year-old son.

And he has now released a statement to the M.E.N. saying: “I’m very grateful for the help and support I have received, and back-up from the public.”

His Stockport-based solicitor Kieran Henry said his client remained ‘anxious and worried’ as he waits to find out whether the Crown Prosecution Service will press charges against him over the death.

Mr Cooke’s arrest has prompted an internet campaign on Facebook backing him for protecting his home.

One poster, John Baxter-Pye, wrote: “A brave man and an example to all of us. He only did what anyone else would and should have done in the circumstances. My full support to this cause.

Another, Jane Henthorn posted: “Keep your chin up, Vince. You did exactly what any other self-respecting person would have done. You defended you and yours. Well done.”

Michael Anthony Thorpe, 33, of Outwood Road, Heald Green, has appeared before Stockport magistrates charged with aggravated burglary at Mr Cooke’s home.

He was remanded in custody.
