Sun enchanted evening: Photographers capture spectacular sunset over Greater Manchester

Helen Stradling took this picture outside her house in Stockport looking over East Manchester

A spectacular sunset over Manchester had amateur photographers dashing for their cameras last night.

The setting sun lit up a bank of low cloud to bask the entire sky overhead in an orange glow.

Nature's evening light show lasted for over half an hour up until about 7.15pm and commuters across the city were seen gazing upwards to take it in.

Many posted comments and pictures on Twitter about the spectacle.

Joel Weaver wrote: "Manchester providing a sweet sunset tonight!" and Kieran Crosby posted a tweet saying the sunset was 'mentally cool'.

Rachel Spink said: "The sunset in Manchester tonight was so good I saw 3 separate people taking photos of it on their phones at Oxford Rd."

And a Twitter user called Emmma wrote: "Whoda thought a nice sunset would bring out the feminine side of all the blokes in Manchester. Awww"

So many people were posting images and comments that the word 'sunset' began trending on Twitter in Manchester.

Some really nice photos here! Living out here in Sunny Norfolk, I've got used to seeing sunsets like (and better) than this on a regular basis - Big East Anglian sky = Great sunsets.

Still, it's good to see that not everyone back in Manchester wanders around looking at their feet between showers..
