Thousands aim to make We Love MCR day a towering success

Manchester Town Hall is adorned with a 'We Love MCR' banner

Manchester landmarks will be dressed to impress as the city prepares for We Love MCR day tomorrow.

More than 11,500 people have joined the I Love MCR campaign on Facebook – and dozens of businesses and organisations have signed up to celebrate.

The Co-op was today unveiling a 56-metre high I Love MCR banner, spanning 15 floors of the CIS Tower. And beating hearts will be projected on to landmarks including Urbis and Piccadilly Tower tonight. The day is designed as a celebration of the best things about Manchester in defiance of the riots.

Exchange Square will be the focus of We Love MCR day, with a string of live performances from 4pm-6pm, and free sweet treats handed out by local firms including Hey Little Cupcake.

There will also be a mass ‘tweet up’ at 5.30pm where people will be asked to send messages of love for the city to Twitter.

Afflecks will be unveiling their ‘And on the 6th day God created Manchester’ mosaic on the outside of the building.

Inside, store holders are offering discounts to anyone in an I Love MCR T-shirt and people are being invited to record what the city means to them on a permanent Manchester wall.

I thought we'd had all this baloni last weekend. Friday afternoon for god's sake. More chaos, more money from parking. You can't knock the Albert Square Mafia for money spinning can you.

Here is how I see it. The lowest forms of mancunians have just had 2 weeks of press and made us look like shameless! Now the flipside of the city will be out together, the MEN will take good photos of the day and we can see what our peope are really about. Hardworking, caring and respectable cizitens.

I quite like Manchester, I love burritos. Looks like I'll be going to the Trafford Centre tomorrow then!

Incidentally, MEN, there is no such thing as Piccadilly Tower. That's that building site near the station. I think you mean City Tower. That'll look pretty cool mind.

Did someone say free cup-cakes....

Anyway, other possible side-shows:

3-5pm: Slap-a-looter
If you're wearing an I love MCR t-shirt you get the first slap.

5-7pm: A Pound for Pat
Your chance to give a pound of your own money to Manchester's Councillor Pat Karney to show how much good will there is out there. Let's see if we can raise more than we've spent on all this fun...!

7-Late: Drink 'til your Sick for MCR
Everyone's Friday night treat - drink tequila in every bar in Manchester until you feel sick, then be expected to make your way home in a decent orderly fashion.

See you there at 3pm people!

MEN has become very dull, allowing comment on football and little else.
