Video: Rochdale cake decorator shellshocked as she finds 29 double-yolkers in box of 30 eggs

CRACKING … Charlotte Matthews shows of her double yolk bonanza

A cake decorator was left shell-shocked when she cracked open 29 double yolk eggs in a row. Charlotte Matthews beat massive odds when she made the amazing discovery in a tray of 30 eggs.

The 26-year-old bought the box in Asda to make cakes and a Sunday morning fry-up.

And after cracking open 13 double yolks in a row she asked husband Gavin to film her while she opened the rest - watch the video below ...

She missed out on the full house when the last egg in the tray was a single yolk.

Charlotte said: "I was absolutely astounded. We made breakfast then wanted to see if the rest were the same so on Tuesday we decided to crack them all open.

"I am a cake decorator, so I go through a lot of eggs, but this is so strange.

"I have probably used thousands of eggs and have never ever seen one double yolk before."

According to the the British Egg Information Service the chance of getting a double yolk is one in 1,000.

So the odds of opening 29 on the trot are one in 1,000 to the power of 29 - or one followed by 87 zeros.

Charlotte, who lives in College Bank, Rochdale, with her husband Gavin and daughter Kacey, bought the £2.39 tray of Smartprice eggs from Asda in Rochdale

She added: "They did feel a little bit bigger and heavier than normal eggs.

"I do wonder if there is some sort of super chicken out there laying double yoked eggs.

"I will probably just make a cake with them - or lots of scrambled eggs."

Sara Emanuelson from the British Egg Information Service, said: "The chance of finding a double yolk egg in a box is about 0.1 per cent or one in 1000.

"Because double yolk eggs tend to come from younger hens when you find one you are likely to find another.

"But to find 29 out of 30 is pretty impressive and Charlotte is a very very lucky lady."

You should be ashamed, buying eggs from caged hens.

if the chance of finding a double yolk in a box (ambiguous, but lets say a box contains 6 eggs) is 0.1%, then to find 29 in one box....i think its fairly obvious that someone at the egg factory is playing a practical yolk

This eggs-traordinary story really cracked me up, I though it was one big yoke or at least the story was egg-saggerated when I read it.

Personally on those odds I'd rather win the lottery. Charlotte is quite welcome to pick my numbers for me and should I win, will keep her in eggs for life.

I take it that they aren't free range at that kind of price. Shame.

That's what you get for buying crap eggs from caged hens.

Pretty much everything you buy that involves eggs will use eggs from caged hens. So perhaps those people who are throwing the insults around might want to think about this next time they are having a bit of shop bought cake or dropping a bit of mayo on their prawn butties.
