Filthy, fly-infested Little Hulton takeaway was ‘serious health risk’ to the public

The owner of a filthy fly-infested takeaway has been fined.

When council inspectors visited the business they discovered flies entering the kitchen from an uncovered outside drain.

Owner Shameem Akhtar, 33, had failed to keep clean his Zeeshan premises on Manchester Road West in Little Hulton, ignoring warnings from Salford’s environmental health inspectors.

He pleaded guilty at Salford magistrates to four food hygiene offences court in a case brought by the council.

Evidence was also presented at court to show a poor standard of cleaning throughout the premises.

Food was being stored at the wrong temperatures in fridges, there was no hot water connected to the hand-wash basin, and equipment was not being properly maintained.

There were dirty chopping boards, grease-ridden surfaces, missing tiles to walls and damaged ceilings, the court heard.

Akhtar, of Eric Street, Oldham, was ordered to clean up his act. When officers visited two days later some effort had been made to put things right but not to a satisfactory standard.

Akhtar was served with six food hygiene improvement notices and one for health and safety for having no proof that gas appliances were being correctly maintained.

In October, officers went back to find conditions had partly improved but not enough to comply with one of the food hygiene improvement notices.

Akhtar was fined £2,000 in total – £500 per offence –and ordered to pay £1,000 towards court costs.

Coun Ray Mashiter, Salford council’s lead member for environment, said: “This owner’s dirty premises posed as a serious health risk to the public and there is no excuse for it.

“The individual ignored several warnings about the poor standards of cleaning and we had no choice but to take action on behalf of the public.”

The Zeeshan takeaway is no longer in business.

In britain we need to have a hygien certificate and business certificate to prove that the premises and staff are trained in basic hygein and should be checked every six months at the cost of the shop owners and the safety of the public.these filthy places change owners all to often to sidestep any responsibility.

PUTS YOU RIGHT OFF DOESNT IT I CANNOT AFFORD TAKEAWAYS NOW BUT WHEN I DID GET THEM I ONLY WENT TO THE ONES WHERE YOU CAN SEE INTO THE KITCHEN AS THEY COOK IT IS NO EXCUSE I KNOW BUT TAKINGS ARE THAT FAR DOWN THAT PLACES ARE CUTTING CORNERS TO EARN A CRUST [ NO PUN INTENDED ] OFTEN AT THE EXPENSE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NEED FOOD HYGIENE AND THIS NOT ONLY CAN LOSE CUSTOMERS BUT LIVES TOO

I dont understand why they are able to carry on trading when they are a hazard.

And the fine is pathetic. They have been trading for months like this - the fine should be in relation to takings

What are their names????? they come from a country that is third world, thats spotless compared to some of the places in india and Pakistan i have seen.

The health dept' can't protect you! Reputation and a willingness to "show-off" a clean kitchen is the solution. There oughta be enterprising individuals who capitalise on these opportunities. Then again perhaps the public is not demanding it and are satisfied to take chances?
