Video & pictures: A Level student Nicola McConnell, 18, is crowned Miss Manchester 2011

Nicola McConnell, 18, lifted the title after beating a string of beauties in a contest last night at Panacea in Alderley Edge.

A schoolgirl from Rochdale is today celebrating being crowned Miss Manchester 2011 - by quietly reading her biology text books.

Nicola McConnell, 18, lifted the title after beating a string of beauties in a contest last night at Panacea in Alderley Edge.

But the pupil at Oldham Hulme Grammar School is too busy to celebrate as she has a Biology A Level exam on Monday to revise for.

The straight A student, who hopes to study medicine at the University of Manchester, wowed a judging panel including footballer Robbie Savage and new Coronation Street star Michelle Collins.

Michelle said she found it hard to decide between the girls. "I was giving all of them five out of five because they are all so beautiful", she said.

Other celebrities at the bash at Panacea in Alderley Edge including Mario Marconi and Lisa Appleton from Big Brother 9 and Jorgie Porter from Hollyoaks.

Winner Nicola beat off competition from Charlotte Dawson, daughter of comic legend Les Dawson, who made it to the final ten but was just pipped to the post for the title.

That was despite Charlotte's efforts to impress the judges by doing one of her dad's famous gurns for the judges.

Big Brother star Mario Marconi phoned police during the beauty pageant claiming he had been assaulted. Police confirmed today that officers were investigating his claim.

It is understood that Mario made the allegation after a disturbance with doormen. No injuries were reported.

These contests are degrading to women and further fuel the view that women are nothing more than objects. Women and men should be treated as human beings not as sex objects.

Typical comments from those that wish to view women as sex objects. How many of you would want your wife/girlfriend/sister in these competitions to be stared at my strangers? I would imagine not one of you would wish that. In your view it's ok to stare at a woman just as long as your wife/girlfriend etc isn't the one being stared at.

This country is obsessed with treating women as sex objects - just look in newspapers/magazines and on TV.

Treat women with respect, they are not objects for men to lust after.

why do you refer to her as a "schoolgirl"? she is an 18 year old young woman who is a college...

Competitions like this are a bit silly to most of the population,

I would be more than happy if my girlfriend wanted to enter, I also know girls who have entered both now and in the past. My girlfriend could do whatever she likes as i would expect the same from her. Just because someone wants to enter a competition that shows off their looks, figure and personality doesnt mean they become less a person than the next.
You will be asking women in the swimming pools to cover up next because you think its downgrading. Get a grip you idiot.

As for treating them as sex objects, the girls in the competition will of wanted to do the competition on there own accord im sure. Nobody puts them upto it. If they believe they have what it takes to win it, why not?

Id also say women in this country are treated equal. We dont stone ours to death because they have had an affair, Everyone have there own views but if you dont like it. 1. dont look at the article
2. dont comment
3. find another country where they treat women better and ban any beauty pageants and go and live there, (good luck with that one, I think you might need it)

These women rating contests are objectifying and harmful to everyone. No wonder so many females have eating disorders and depression from low self esteem when this kind of thing is celebrated.
