MEN Media snapper Chris Gleave has been honoured at the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards - the 'Oscars' of the regional newspaper industry.

Chris was named weekly photographer of the year for a trio of pictures which judges said were 'striking, powerful and clever'.

The ceremony, held yesterday in London, recognises the best in journalism from across Britain.

Chris won the award for pictures which included a portrait of Gordon Brown campaigning before the general election last year; a picture of Beady Eye singer Liam Gallagher; and a striking snow scene in Mossley.

Judges said: "Chris submitted a portfolio of photographs that demonstrated a tremendous ability to create varied images from highly different assignments. Striking, powerful and clever."

Chris, 54, said: "It was an amazing ceremony and I didn't even expect to be nominated.

"To win the award was also amazing because the quality of people short listed was excellent."

The Manchester Evening News also won an award for Digital Innovation Of The Year during the ceremony and was nominated in a total of seven categories.

Sean Hansford was also nominated in the weekly photographer of the year category, James Robson was in the running in the sports journalist category, Peter Devine for designer of the year and Dan Thompson for reporter of the year.

The MEN was also nominated for Front page of the year and supplement of the year for our City Life pull-out on Fridays.

Well done Dad, this is well deserved after all those years sitting on a cold seat at Manchester United, waiting patiently on many occasion for 'the' shot and dealing with everyone you shoot in a respectful and polite way. xxx
