A TRAM carrying commuters suddenly veered off the track and into a pylon.
It was travelling from Piccadilly station to the city centre at 6.30am yesterday when it derailed and hit a pole holding up the power lines that connect to the tram.
The force of the crash damaged one of the doors but tram operator Serco Metrolink has ruled out speed as the cause of the accident and insisted that no passengers were injured.
They say a "technical problem" caused the accident, which happened on a bend along London Road near Piccadilly Gardens.
Engineers are examining the tram to try to establish what went wrong. Its side and front doors were damaged and it is not known how long it will now be out of action for repairs.
It will add to the existing shortage of trams that has been causing some delays across the network.
Replacement
All trams were cancelled between Piccadilly Station and Piccadilly Gardens yesterday.
There were delays of around 15 minutes to trains to Bury and Altrincham and 25 minutes on services to Eccles. An emergency timetable was established, which operated replacement services.
A Serco Metrolink spokewoman insisted no one was in danger when the crash happened.
She said: "We would like to apologise to all our customers for the delays that they experienced to their journey.
"As soon as the derailment was advised to our control room, arrangements were made to implement an emergency timetable.
"Engineers worked throughout the day to re-rail the vehicle and clear the site in order to carry out a thorough investigation into the cause of the derailment. When the tram left the track it travelled approximately 30 feet before it came to a halt."

I am sick and tired of hearing "Metrolink would like to apologise for any delay this will cause to your journey" I HEAR THIS AT LEAST FOUR TIME PER WEEK!!!, I pay 45 pounds for my monthly ticket and find myself having to get a bus into the city centre. Manchester is a major european city and Mancunians deserve a public transport system that reflects this!

Maybe a remedy for all this is cynicism is to introduce another operator therefore taking away Serco's monopoly on Manchester's tram network. That way customers will actually have a choice as to who they travel with.

This derailment had nothing to do with fast speeds, it happened between Piccadilly Gardens and the station, where the trams don't surpass 10mph.

I've noticed many places in dis-repair with support concrete/blocks subsiding.
I'm surprised it didn't happen much sooner.
Trams are not an outmoded form of transport, they are clearly NOT ancient, and for most they are preferable to being stuck in traffic 2hrs a day, and when more and more cars are banned from city centres they will be the main form of transport for many.
How many of those that have commented, could handle the abuse drivers get ...NONE of you.
Drivers and their unions have been campaigning for years for more security, but typical, private companys prefer profits before safety.

Secondly, we are told that the tram travelled 30 feet before hitting the post - how fast was it going?
These glib statements don't cut much ice, I'm afraid.

I have also been suprised by the fact that the line to Bury still has the rails that were present when the old 3rd rail units used to bounce along ! These should have been replaced YEARS AGO !! After all the usage is a damn site more than under BR even though these trams dont have much weight in them !
How come the HSE have not had a gentle word in SERCO`s ear and said "Come on chaps SPEND SOME MONEY ON MAINTAINANCE OR ELSE" ?

Ticket machines always reject coins and need to be reaplced. Also needs to be an option of pay with debit card or some other option of pament such as a "top up" card.
Trams become full too soon in rush hour and people still try to push themselves on when there clearly isnt any room!!
