Anti-terror cops have spoken to community leaders in Manchester amid fears of reprisals over the killing of Osama bin Laden.
A senior source said that the risk of attack remains at the same official level – despite concerns revenge missions could be launched.
Officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit met figures in Cheetham Hill after the al Qaeda leader was shot dead by US Navy Seals in a Pakistan compound on Sunday.
The north Manchester suburb has been noted in terror trials as a risk area but the source said feedback had been ‘positive’.
He added that officers would be keeping a close eye out for any increase in activity over the coming months.
The source said: "It is too early to tell what the impact is but we remain vigilant and over the coming weeks we will be working very closely with the communities.
"The reaction we are getting is that people are happy this has happened. He (bin Laden) was a terrorist and a murderer."
The source said that the risk was still ‘severe’ – as it has been for the past 16 months – which is the second highest level.
He added: "There is no specific intelligence that an attack is imminent but it is too early to say whether what happened in Pakistan will act as a motivator."
The comments come as community leaders call for vigilance.
Khan Moghal, the chief executive of Manchester Council For Community Relations, believes the killing of bin Laden may put the city at an increased risk.
He said: "The death of the spiritual and ideological head of al Qaeda may trigger small extremist groups to undertake actions to destabilise our society.
"We ask all residents of Manchester to keep calm and remain vigilant against any such acts."
Mr Moghal said members of all faiths had already expressed solidarity in light of the killing.

'Fear of Reprisals'. What we saying here - Some, most, all of them BACK Bin Ladens antics ?
Well I would have never thought that for a minute.......
'Smoke them out' & give us our country back.
Why does this appeal need to be made? As we keep on hearing in the media, there is no threat from Islam, it is a peaceful and tolerant religion.
Still I suppose it's only the same thing as that big meeting we had after 9/11 urging all British Christians to remain calm and offering reassurance and a point of contact...........
How many have died to feed the yanks oil addiction.
They kill in the name of religion, we kiil for natural resources, what is the difference and why are people in the west so smug when they're up to their knees in blood themselves
So why haven't teh police contacted workers and businesses in the city centre to say that there may be an attack?
I am sorry but why have the police had a chat with them? Is it because there are fears that there are terrorists amongst that community or is it to apologise.
What was the purpose of the police visiting one section of our community?
looks like the elephant has been spotted.................
I suppose the EDL supporters and other promoters of another holocaust will be pointing their fingers at Irish people now that the Real IRA are killing people again.
Or maybe not.
Absolutely ridiculous that any official body should go pandering to these people. Let them come out and protest all they like. That way we can identify them, provided they aren't covered like some cowards, and then deport them to a country that has all they want - an islamic government, sharia law, oh, and no benefits!
What have a load of illegals in North Manchester got to do with the killing of Bin Laden.
So, no body produced, no images produced, no video of the live feed viewed produced, no wives produced. All we have are the claims of the US Government which has been proven to lie repeatedly along with the UK Gov on this bogus war on terror. Bin Laden buried at sea? LMAO yeah if you say so..
