BBC Breakfast presenters Sian Williams and Chris Hollins to quit after MediaCity move

Sian Williams and Chris Hollins

BBC Breakfast presenter Sian Williams is leaving the show after its move to Salford, it has been reported.

Staff have until midnight on Wednesday to decide whether they want to stay with the programme which is currently based in London.

The Daily Mirror reported Williams and sports presenter Chris Hollins will leave the show.

Her agent told the paper the move was not an issue but that Williams wanted a break from the show's early starts.

He said: "We've been talking to the BBC for the past six to nine months about potential new roles where she doesn't need to use her alarm clock quite so frequently."

The paper reported Williams might commute briefly to Salford in the early stages of the move and that co-hosts Bill Turnbull and Susanna Reid would stay with the show.

A BBC spokesman said: "No one needs to make a decision until the end of March 30 so it is all speculation."

When the move was announced last July, BBC News director Helen Boaden said it would involve "personal and professional decisions" for people who work on the show.

It is part of a plan by the corporation to relocate around 2,000 jobs outside the capital.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that a consultant has been paid more than £650 a day to find jobs for local people at the BBC’s flagship development at Salford Quays.

Salford council paid the fee to Chris Marsh under the ‘Media City and Salford Life Chances Pilot’.

The scheme promotes employment opportunities for the city’s deprived communities.

Salford council say the number of Salford people employed at Media City proves the worth of the post and its rate of pay.

Mr Marsh was the former director of regeneration at Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, the organisation behind the redevelopment of Chapel Street.
It was wound up last year, due to government cuts. Last month, Salford council announced it would axe 800 jobs and slash £47m from its budget due to Treasury cuts.

The contract will see Mr Marsh paid £46,800 for the next six months – which works out at £650 a day for 12 days work a month. Salford council chief executive Barbara Spicer said: “This is a specialist role to ensure that local people and businesses benefit from the work that is generated at Media City UK.

“So far more than 1,500 Salford residents have been employed and more than £112m in contracts has been given to local companies. The rate that this consultant is being paid reflects the market value of the job and, as these figures show, brings benefit that by far exceeds the cost.”

Said it before and I will say it again.
Established stars will not move (why would they?), but this will give new talent a chance.

Once the established star(s) have faded they will soon change their minds.

Time for a change in any case.

I do not need to watch Chris Hollins attempting his hand at wind kyaking or whatever the crazy irrelevant sport of the day is. Its a news programme - I watch to find out what is going on in the world, strangely.

Sian has thought herself star of the show since strictly - can we have new readers with gravitas reporting the news please? If we want a "magazine" style show we can always watch the junk that is ITV

Career suicide for these two.

Thats a shame - who else is going to carry out her difficult job of smiling falsely whilst simpering into an autocue now ???

Oh and another thing - reviewing a forthcomming programme to appear on the BBC is not news either. Obvious I would have thought but for some reason this has not registered with the beeb.

Pity Sian - it would have been very convenient for you to buy a second home in North Wales.

I can't believe they're trying to criticize Salford council for paying someone a large fee to get jobs for local people. I think it is very commendable of Salford council to make such an investment for the sake of it's people. They obviously paid for the best, rather than the cheapest. A short term outlay of funds like this could yield great benefits to many, in the long term.
Well done Salford council.

Fair enough, these people have jobs that are relocating to Salford and they were given a choice.

This happens in many businesses across the world including ones I've worked for

These two have declined the chance, that doesn't mean they hate the North or the people up here, just that they don't want to move here.

It's not a snub to Salford or Manchester. If my employer wanted me to move nearly 200 miles for the job, I would exercise my rights and tell them where to get off.

I worked in a bank at one time, and some of the robots would move to other cities at the drop of a hat. One manager cancelled his USA holiday of a lifetime for him and his kids because the Bank wanted him to start in Wolverhampton that Monday morning. This was in the 1970's when hardly anyone went to America. Another had to sell his lovely big house in Wilmslow and buy the equivalent of a rabbit hutch in London with the same money. He was told on the Thursday he was moving on the Monday, and he had to take up a hotel room they'd booked for him that Sunday evening. They said his wife's first job Monday morning was to get the house on the market. The idiots just did it, no questions asked. Promises of jam tomorrow would not make me someone's slave.

Shame really I'll miss his high pitched tones.

It's all been said before but they are arrogant to think that people will be beating a path to thier door for work. Let's be honest not exactly the most talented pair in British media. Mr Hollins is probably one of the worst sporting journalists about and this in a sports mad age. Talent up here no doubt to fill their boots, London is one place you don't want to be on the rock and roll.

This pair will be no great loss, also is `Sparky was the best ever` havin a `giraffe`?
No wonder Barbara Spicer is backing Chris Marsh`s job, her salary of £201,329 per annum makes his payment look like peanuts!!!!!

I was going to say how much Chris Hollins irratates me but then I thought:

"No its just me, my hang-up for no good reason"

But it seems no-one likes him and I was right after all.

Chris Hollins will NOT be missed when he leaves the BBC.
Those who do want to move to Greater Manchester, good riddance.
The area is fantastic, and long will it be so.
There are plenty of talent it the area to fill their positions.

More jobs for Northern folk then

Scrap the programme.

It is unnecessary.

Where it is made is irrelevant.

Bring back the test card for daytime TV and slash the licence fee..

Why is this a surprise to everyone ? Surely this is one of the reasons for moving North - to rid of the dull, stade, uninspiring production which is the BBC breakfast show - and it's present co-hosts. come on - we can do much bettr than this !

As long as they don't get Adrian Childes back,he is the worst presenter ever! Watching the England match at the moment and I will turn off as soon as he comes on my TV!
Where do they get these people from(I could do better myself) and they get rid of an excellent one like Richard Keys?
