THE crushed body of a car mechanic was found by his 11-year-old daughter, an inquest heard yesterday.
Brian Peters, 57, of Range Road, Shaw Heath, Stockport, was killed two days before he was due to celebrate his 20th wedding anniversary.
The father-of-three, who was an experienced mechanic, had temporarily jacked up his son's L-registered Vauxhall Astra to remove parts before scrapping it.
The inquest into his death at Stockport magistrates' court heard of how Jessica, now aged 12 discovered the tragedy in April. In a statement, Jessica said she was on her computer before answering a telephone call from someone wanting to speak to her dad.
When Jessica went to look for him she found him motionless in the drive with the car resting on his neck and chest.
She raced back inside and called her mum, Eileen, who was at work.
She told Jessica to call the emergency services.
Wonderful husband
Dr David Vickers told the hearing that Mr Peters could not breathe because of the weight of the car resting on his body and he believed death was "very quick". He said the cause of death was asphyxiation
Police accident investigator Pc Michael Jeffery told the hearing two axle stands found underneath the car were incorrectly positioned. He said the evidence suggested Mr Peters was going to put them in the right place later.
Coroner John Pollard recorded a verdict of accidental death.
After the hearing Mrs Peters paid tribute to her "wonderful husband" who was a "real character."
She said: "Cars have been his life since he was a teenager.
He made his living fixing cars and was always very safety conscious."
