Denton MP Andrew Gwynne plays down health scare

Labour MP Andrew Gwynne is having further health tests after collapsing this summer – but says he feels as fit as a fiddle.

The Denton MP has been told not to drive and has an appointment at Tameside Hospital’s neurology department.

A blood clot was found on his lung when Mr Gwynne, 36, was admitted to hospital in February after suffering from a chest infection.

He was treated with drugs but suffered an allergic reaction to an antibiotic and was diagnosed with asthma and pneumonia.

Mr Gwynne was able to attend his general election count when he was re-elected in May and host a meeting supporting Labour leadership candidate Ed Balls two months later.

But in June, between the two events, the father-of-three collapsed twice while waiting at a bus stop in London.

He explained: “Someone sat me back up but I collapsed again. They rang for a ambulance and I was taken to Westminster and Chelsea Hospital where I spent a few days. I had some tests, but it wasn’t another pulmonary embolism and there is nothing wrong with my heart.

“I feel as fit as a fiddle and as if there’s nothing wrong with me. But until the doctors get to the bottom of things, I've been advised not to drive.

“I fully intend to re-start surgeries in each of the constituency’s wards. In the meantime, constituents can contact my staff in Denton town hall on Wednesday afternoons.”
